I know this has been discussed on the reflector, but I can't find it in
the archives after a bit of searching. I have the RS equivalent of the Koss Ear Plugs which work great on my KX1 for an old guy who can't hear any more. However, I can't get them into my ears so they'll stay for any length of time. I've tried all the shapes that came with them (the hexagonal ones are interesting, but I don't have hexagonal ears ... must just be a genetic defect, or maybe they were for Vulcans). Several folks mentioned awhile ago using standard OSHA safety ear plugs and putting a hole in them. I'd like to know how to put the hole in the plug because I have quite a supply of them for running the chipper, chain saw, blower, etc. Please reply off-reflector ... there's enough traffic on this cyberspot already, and this is an old and well hashed subject. 73, Fred K6DGW Auburn CA CM98lw _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Great ideas. Here is another. Go down to Walmart and
get some Silencio ear plugs from the sporting goods section. Cut them appropriately and put them on instead of the foam. Much more comfortable for me and a better seal. 73 de w1mt mike --- Steven Pituch <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hi Fred, > Good subject, even for this reflector. Leave it to all you hardcore kit builders and home brewers to carve up ear plugs and turn this into a project. :-) I use these at the gym and they're fantastic: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5335728&type=product&id=105182 6204625 They're from Sony and they're $40. They fit nicely in the ear and block out background noise. They have good frequency response. I've tried other earbuds and I don't understand what species they're designed for. These Sonys fit right into the ear canal. They're great. Hi Craig,
The problem with ear buds is that they do not fit my ears. I have tried many of them. They hurt terribly. Also I have to press them forcibly against my head to get the best around. That's why I will try the Koss type that have the narrow sound pipe and the compressible foam around them. I guess they are truly in-the-ear types. I also heard that they sound much better too. I have found that some ear buds fit better if you switch them to the other
ear, or turn them slightly so that the wire exits at an angle to the rear of the head. Maybe you can find a more comfortable position that way. On another headphone note: From time to time, I report on using "Cosmetic Sponges" as cushions for old fashioned headphones of the high impedance bakelite type. Besides Walgreens drug Store, I have found some of the local Dollar Stores carries 8 White sponge disks for $1.29. That would equip four headsets. Those are the most comfortable solution to headphone cushions for hard cased phones. You cut a hole in the middle of the round sponge disk for the sound holes of the diaphragm. Use double sided "Scotch" tape to affix the disk to the cover of the headphones. The phones can be worn for long hours of contesting in complete comfort using these improvised cushions. They are more comfortable than the original black rubber sponge cushions that snapped around the "cans" back in the old days. -Stuart K5KVH _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I've tried this and the problem I have is that since the pads are between the phones and my ears, they just mash my ears against the earpieces of my glasses! What I need is something that will fit AROUND the ears, letting my head take the pressure rather than the ears. And of course they need to be soft enough to let the earpieces of the glasses through. > They are more comfortable than the original black rubber sponge cushions > that snapped around the "cans" back in the old days. I don't know about that, but I wish I knew where to get the old-style cushions. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Vic,
The diameter of the cosmetic pads I have found is smaller, (slightly) than the Trimm type and Military Surplus phones I have used them on. I do wear glasses 100 per cent of the time, and these pads have not been a problem. They do not stick out forward of the ear enough to touch the glasses frame ear pieces, and they are soft enough to cushion the ear without placing undue pressure on the ear upon the glasses ear piece hooking over the ear. I find them entirely adequate, since the old style rubber foam ear pads are no longer manufactured, in the USA, as far as I can find out. You could cut the pads perhaps if your glasses have larger ear pieces. They are soft white foam that is easily handled with scissors. -Stuart K5KVH _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
