Elecraft CW Net Announcement

Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
It has come upon us once again: Daylight Savings Time.  Thanks to
Benjamin Franklin we get to change our clocks to give us more working
light.  I am unsure why we still do this since we have electric lights but
it somehow persists.  The factories constructed in the late 19th and early
20th centuries had skylights and many large vertical windows to allow more
natural light to shine within.  The remaining structures from this period
have had those large windows mostly or entirely bricked closed since we
use artificial lighting within our modern day sweatshops.  Next year we
will have two more months of savings due to new rules.  However, you folks
in parts of Indiana, Hawaii, and Arizona don't need to worry about this
since daylight savings does not occur in those places.
After that long digression I will announce our new (?) times.  I had
been planning on moving the time back to where they were before due to the
increase in daylight hours.  This gives me the perfect reason to do so.
I'll leave the net times at their UTC or Zulu times so you that have
clocks set in this manner will not need to change anything.  I will have
to remember to change my internal clock.  After Ms. Pat took leave of this
world I have been very busy.  24 hours never seems like enough time to get
all of our chores done.  Moving the nets back to their old times will give
me an extra hour on Sunday afternoon to clean, cook, wash, cut and split
wood, and so on.  Hopefully the propagation will keep improving but these
step functions in time do play havoc with both folks' schedules and with
our relationship with the ionosphere.
The weather has been bouncing back and forth between downpour and very
sunny today.  I got some chores done early this morning but wood was not
one of them; it rained far too much.  Hopefully tomorrow morning will let
me get a week's worth of wood split and carried into the house.  Luckily
it is warming up so I don't burn as much.  In a month or two I may only
have to have a fire a week to keep the chill off.  We have had a few years
where we went a month without a fire during the summer but that is not
always true.  The daffodils are starting to bloom at 1000 feet so I expect
they will start blooming here in a week or two.  Each one I see reminds me
of her so I have a lot of memories these days ;)

     Please join us:
Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4pm PDT) 14050 kHz
Monday 0200z (Sunday 7pm PDT)  7045 kHz

    Until tomorrow,
       Kevin.  KD5ONS

Because we live by the clock and not by the sun. And because we're mostly
'evening people'

If the sun rises an hour earlier, most folks won't get up/go out an hour
earlier to enjoy it. But if it sets an hour later, they will stay up/go out an
hour earlier.

And, in many cities, a later sunset simply means the chances of getting mugged
are less....as the muggers sleep late...so they miss the sunrise.

If the April 28, 2005, Indiana state legislation stands up, on April 2, 2006, Indiana will no longer be counted as one of three states which do not Spring ahead from "standard" to "daylight saving" time or Fall back from daylight to standard six months later. The Indiana Legislature voted to approve Daylight Saving Time for Indiana and to petition the US Department of Transporation to hold hearings to determine the location of the dividing line between the Eastern and Central time zones, relative to Indiana.

When I lived in Luxembourg, the start of summertime in the UK was on a
different date from that used in Continental Europe. The official reason
given by the UK government was that the cows in the UK needed their sleep,
according to a LX ham who worked for the Luxembourg goverment.

Re: Elecraft CW Net Announcement

Stephen W. Kercel
Geoff:

Yes, it does seem that cattle raising entails some bizarre problems.
Back when I worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority we held
hearings on a proposed 500 KV transmission line, one end of which was
to terminate at the Phipps Bend Nuclear Plant. One person objecting
to the proposed installation was a dairy farmer through whose farm
the line would pass. He was not worried about the proximity to stray
voltage or the very large electric field associated with such
lines.  Despite the fact that he was over a hundred miles from the
plant, his concern was that his cows would be exposed to all that
radioactive electricity.

Mine has a bug in the DST function.  I disable that feature and then do
what Alexandra does to make it read properly in the Spring/Summer.

Did WWV ever send any DST coding?  I'll bet not.  Setting DST is not rocket science, just a simple algorithm.

Yes, WWV does encode the DST bit. See
http://tf.nist.gov/stations/wwvtimecode.htm for more info on the
format.

I didn't think so, but I did a Google search on "NIST 432" and got the
NIST Special Pub 432 - "Time and Frequency Services".  It seems like
WWVB bits 57 and 58 transmit the DST data (page 20).  I have an older
edition of the same publication (which is why I knew the publication
number) and it is interesting reading.

DST info on WWV and WWVH

In reply to this post by rrennard
I don't know if my previous post made it.  If not, that's OK because
there was an omission:
I did a Google search on "NIST 432" and got the NIST Special Pub 432 -
"Time and Frequency Services".  It seems like WWVB bits 57 and 58
transmit the DST data (page 20).  WWV and WWVH have DST data on bit 55
(page 47).  I have an older edition of the same publication (which is
why I knew the publication number) and it is interesting reading.

Well, no, unless you live in Indiana, where it apparently depends on
street address.  I actually have done rocket science during Apollo, and
I'll take that over street addresses anytime.  Last I heard, they are
going to do DST statewide but left it up to some legislature to
determine the new boundary between EST and CST.  I won't hold my breath
for that action.  Hawaii is easy ... no DST.  I think AZ is similar if
not the same.

Where does all the "saved" daylight actually go?  It was light when I
got up, and dark around dinner at 1730 last week.  Now it's dark when I
get up and light until I get the dishes washed.

I wasn't aware that WWV ever sent DST stuff ... thought it was
programmed into some but not all of the "atomic" clocks.  My "Atomic
Clock" is on UTC in my shack, so it doesn't care, although it keeps
pretty good time -- within about 3 sec.  Wonder what chaos could be
caused if UTC went to DST?

We never see it.  All of the saved daylight ends up on
the other side of the world.  It's a little-known fact
that Daylight Savings Time was invented by the
government of Fernando do Torishima to scam an extra
hour of daylight from the west to keep the 20m band
open longer over there for visiting DXpeditions.

Glad I was able to help...
