I have a K3 carrying case from Ken and his XYL and I love it.
One thing I did notice is it is soft throughout the case. I had my wife make a "stiffener" from plastic canvas used for knitting. this is available at craft stores. My wife cut the plastic canvas material the same size as the bottom of the carrying case and covered it with duck cloth which is soft. With this stiffener on the bottom of the carrying case it provides a stable platform for the feet on the side of the k3 to set on and makes the sides stable to protect the K3 during transport. Placing the K3 in the carrying case with the front panel facing up exposes all the coax/BNC connectors to damage when the case is set down on it's bottom. With the stiffener installed in the case I feel the K3 is much safer with the K3's side feet down.Message: 73 Dave KD1NA Date: Fri, 27 Feb 2009 06:54:31 -0600 From: "Robert Naumann" <[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Dust Covers, Carry Cases, and More To: <[hidden email]> Message-ID: <D191DFFE49BB4273B3643180F24C19FB@SONYRB42G> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" David, If you were not transporting the K3 and merely keeping it safe on a shelf or in a closet, you might want to place it with the handle towards the opening so you could lift it out of the case somewhat more easily with the handle. While transporting it on the shoulder strap, you would want the front panel facing up so you minimize the chances of smashing the delicate front panel into something. Also, since the case is not rigid, the shoulder strap will put pressure on the back and side panels as you carry it with the front panel facing up - I would not want to put that pressure on any part of the front panel. So, when I travel with mine, it's front panel towards the opening - not the handle. 73, Bob W5OV ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Just as a thought, but has anyone tried using a Pelican hard case? I have a
Pelican for my camera gear, and the quality is top-notch. 73, James KC2UEE On Tue, Mar 3, 2009 at 1:56 PM, David Robertson <[hidden email]> wrote: > I have a K3 carrying case from Ken and his XYL and I love it. > > One thing I did notice is it is soft throughout the case. I use both 1700 and 1800 series Pelican cases for my K3, Winkey, paddles, power supply, Heil headset and laptop. Complete station in a box less antenna. USPS, UPS the airlines and customs haven't been able to break anything.......yet. Here is a link to some pics of my K3 in a Pelican case. It does cost a little more than I wanted to spend, but it does protect my stuff very well.

Hi Dave,
Great looking case you have there. I like the way everything is neatly organized. Question; did you cut the foam to fit, or was this the "pluck foam insert" where you can just take out pre-cut blocks? 73, James KC2UEE On Tue, Mar 3, 2009 at 3:09 PM, Dave Van Wallaghen <[hidden email]>wrote: > Here is a link to some pics of my K3 in a Pelican case. Jim,
The middle layers of foam have serrated 1/2" cubes. I laid everything out to where I was happy with it and then put toothpicks in the corners of stuff to mark where to cut. I then used a bread knife to cut out the blocks. Non-square items are a little more challenging, but you'll get it with a little practice. For slim items like the tools, I cut the shape out for the full thickness of the foam and then cut off the thickness I needed and glued the base back in with rubber cement. 73, Dave W8FGU -----Original Message----- From: KC2UEE <[hidden email]> Date: Tue, 3 Mar 2009 15:28:46 To: <[hidden email]> Cc: <[hidden email]>; David Robertson<[hidden email]>; Elecraft<[hidden email]> Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Carrying Cases Hi Dave, Great looking case you have there.
