Good idea, Don - have your name, callsign and the Elecraft logo
embroidered on the cap, much like Rose does for the covers and carrying cases for the Elecraft transceivers. Dave, point taken. Whoever came up with the idea of using shirts, caps, visors, etc. for advertising must be a millionaire. I'm guilty of abetting numerous ham vendors, microbreweries, etc. by buying T-shirts that advertise their company and products. I'm not big on caps, but I did buy one of the caps from Lisa at the Elecraft booth. Getting thinner on top is beginning to necessitate wearing one. That said, a couple of things. First of all, I'm not certain that Yaesu was giving away caps. I saw some, but they could have been from a prior event. Second, in talking with Lisa, she said that these were not $2 caps. I can see that they are made very well, and the Elecraft name and logo are embroidered. It's a dark blue color, which is my favorite. Third (okay, I lied), Elecraft is not Yaesu -yet. I'm sure that it cost quite a bit for booth space, travel, lodging and meals for the number of staffers who came along, and for shipping all of their display equipment both ways. The first time I stopped to talk with Lisa, a guy bought a KX3 with - cash! Wow! The second time, Lisa gave caps to another guy and his YL/XYL (or he may have paid for them; I don't know) but she said that he bought $10,000 worth of Elecraft products. You know, when this discussion began, I felt a bit ashamed to be a member of this fraternity. Same for whoever complained about not being able to get the convention discount when he didn't attend the convention. We hams have a reputation for being cheap, but if we can afford to buy the various Elecraft products, can't we afford to pay for a nicely-made cap? 73 de Jim - AD6CW ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Nice post, Jim.
Yaesu was giving mousepads this year, not hats. So apparently, even the new, independent Yaesu can't afford to give away hats. I bought a hat from Elecraft this year and didn't mind doing it. I then went over to the embroidery booth and spent another $10 putting my call on the hat, so I actually was dumb enough to spend $22 on my hat. Elecraft is never going to be Yaesu, and that suits me just fine. Elecraft has sold 7100 K3s. Yaesu has probably sold ten times as many FT2000/5000/9000s. Plus Yaesu sells HTs and mobiles along with hundreds of overpriced accessories (check the price of the non-upgradable DMU2000 to prove my point). So one cannot really compare the two companies. I also really like the fact that Elecraft upgrades the K3 and doesn't make me buy a new rig every couple of years to keep up with improvements. So, those people complaining about Elecraft's tight purse strings should take a minute to stop and think about why. 73, Scott, N9AA On 5/19/13 3:17 PM, Jim Lowman wrote: > That said, a couple of things. And may you recover quickly. I literally can't tell you how extremely useful Dayton was to me this year, because of the employees of Elecraft and related companies. And I thought last year at Dayton was good! Thanks for putting up with all of us. I know the sheer numbers can be daunting; someone compared the tsunami of hamsters descending upon the Elecraft booth at 9:01 am to the Capital One Vikings commercial. I really like Elecraft's designs, and their commitment to get it right. Where else would you find a for-profit company with customers volunteering to help at the booth? 73, Bob NZ9E |

Evangelizing customers is a very important part of the Elecraft business and
advertising model. It works. A small company like Elecraft relies upon (and needs) enthusiastic customers to help "spread the word". It's the best advertising money can't buy. Agreed. I enjoy helping out at the Elecraft booth at every New England ARRL
Convention. I always take time during the weekend to answer any questions I can for prospective buyers. I try not to exaggerate or sugar-coat. I give my opinions and relay my experience. I explain why Elecraft products have a prominent role in my station, having tried many different radios. My station is not exclusively Elecraft, but I do have now, and have had, many of their products. I have built, owned and repaired the entire product line, at one time or another. It's not about drinking the Kool-Aid. Many of you are probably too young to remember the true history of that reference anyway; (Jonestown, Guyana, 1978). (For me), volunteering at the Elecraft booth is about sharing your experiences with others, and letting them make their own judgments. Answering questions honestly, and saying "I don't know", when that's the case. I do it to help share my experience, if anyone should ask. It's a small way of "giving back", and helping other's make their own informed decisions. If you mean Ken Kesey, then no, I don't think that's the relevant reference.
Ken Kesey (and the gang of Merry Pranksters) used LSD laced Kool-Aid to promote communal tripping. The Jonestown example was far darker, a case of blindly following a misguided trust to oblivion. It was after that incident that "drinking the Kool-Aid", took on a whole new meaning... It remains a cautionary tale, with a sober lesson that people should think for themselves. > I thought the reference was to Ken Keasey and The Merry Pranksters from > the '60s. > Kevin. OK, it's 1945PDT Sun night out here on the western frontier, that would
be 2145CDT in Dayton, and Dayton is over. Possibly the "Hat Traffic" on the list, with or without elevated or buried radials, will subside? It was fun for awhile, a little old now. I have been to Dayton at Hamvention-time many times. In the hotel elevators, packed in with a bunch of guys with multiple HT's on their belts ... they went to Hamvention, I went to work at WPAFB. One of these days ... hat or no hat. Actually, how did "Dayton" become the ham radio destination for the world in May? I know, the W Bros and bikes and all, but NC claims "First in Flight," with some justification. It's a real question, off list would be fine, one of my subsidiary hobbies is historical trivia. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 5/19/2013 7:21 PM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: > No matter what the product or service for my business or for my pleasure I > go out of my way to support and recommend those that provide me with good > value for my money because I want them around in the future. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Actually, both the Ken Kesey reference and the Jim Jones People's Temple reference are valid sources for the phrase "I drank the Kool Aide", or "...drinking the Kool Aide". Real truth can be found only through Google! I drank the Google Kool Aide.
