Elecraft K3; recent antenna mis-understanding

Richard Fjeld
Recently, I expressed some mis-understanding about resonance.  I got some nasty replies and insults.  That was discouraging.

Thanks to Tony, KT0NY, who patiently answered some of my curious questions, I now see the error of my ways.

I have been using a MFJ-212 Matchmaker to help me tune my manual tuner using open wire feedline to a homebrew delta loop on 80 thru 10 meters.  I like it because I can tune while receiving.  The MFJ-212 puts out a pulsing white noise at RF and I see a VEE displayed on my P3 as I reach the correct adjustment of the L and C in the tuner.  I can move the vee up, or down, in frequency as I tune the tuner.  It seemed like evidence that I was seeing resonance, and I would hear weak stations appear as I neared the optimum tune position. If anyone is curious what the vee looks like, I can send a pic off line.

BTW, without changing the tuner from one day to the next and after a rain or fog, I have seen the vee positioned down as much as 40 Khz in frequency while the antenna and feedline were wet.

The P3 and Matchmaker compliment each other, and I can fine-tune my tuner with it. I just have to be careful how I choose words to describe what I am seeing on the P3.

Hi,

The MFJ212 is a brilliant idea, but it has one fatal flaw: It doesn't work with auto-tuners. I was using one for several years, but it's been collecting dust since I graduated to a remotely located auto-tuner.

Folks - Nasty replies, on or off-list, are in violation of list
guidelines and in general are poor amateur practice. There is no need to
exert your ego here by insulting another ham.  When you do this, you in
fact demean yoursef.  Those of you that sent nasty replies and insults
to Richard owe him and the list an apology.

All technical questions are welcome here, regardless of the technical
level of the person asking them. Please reply in a polite manner. We all
were newer hams once..

Also please remember that when you reply to a posting here, or via
direct email, that you are in fact a ambassador for Elecraft and the
Elecraft community. Please do not damage us or that relationship by
insulting others.

Also, if you feel you are being abused via email by a list member,
please forward that email to the moderator.
