Elecraft : Thinking of buying a K2

Martin.Evans

Hi guys and happy new year to you all. I built a K1 about 3 years ago now
(my first rig in fact) and it has been in regular use since. I am more than
satisfied with the K1 but feel the need for the big brother to give me more
coverage, quicker band switching and SSB capability. I intend to get the
basic K2 and add the SSB module at a later stage. Does anyone know the
latest situation with shipping to the UK. Last time I had to pay duty and
VAT.

You should not have to pay duty, Martin, as Elecraft use a customs code
that exempts the package from duty. But you likely will have to pay UK
VAT at 17.5% plus a fee of a few pounds that Royal Mail charge for
collecting the VAT.

These days, you will probably get a card put through your door by your
regular postman to say that the package is awaiting collection at your
local sorting office.

Good luck with your K2.  You will not be disappointed.

Martin,

You have to pay VAT if a parcel FROM OUTSIDE EU comes into your hands.
That's all.

It works like this:
All goods travelling within the EU is free of this "extra" VAT. If you
buy someting in DL you pay the VAT of DL at the time of puchase and you
don't have to pay the UK VAT. That's how it works. For every parcel
coming into EU you have to pay the VAT of the country where you live (in
PA: 19%). (and there are the shipping costs ofcourse).
Think of it this way: the prices in dollars becomes the price in euro's
(1 euro is about 1,25 dollar).
