WOW. A 2.49% discount. Does that qualify as a Black Friday sale?

Level of discount silly and not at all in keeping with the concept of a "Black Friday" sale, IMHO. If Elecraft can't afford to offer a true "Black Friday" discount (nothing shameful in that), it should just pass (or offer the presented discounts simply as holiday or end of year discounts). $70 isnt going to cause me (or most folks, I suspect) to jump at buying a K3S or feel like I've gotten a great "Black Friday" deal. (Please, no flames; just offering MHO.)

Actually, to be fair, offering everyone a small discount, vice a substantial discount on a very limited number of units, has merit. I withdraw my previous (friendly!) criticism. :-)

Think about it -- those who offer large discounts for special sales are
not losing money, they have large markups built in, and are simply reducing them for that sale. Elecraft sells direct, with no commission to "dealers" who do nothing but ship boxes in and out the door, and they price their products as low as they can and still stay in business. Remember that the equipment they sell must support telephone support, a service department to do both in-warranty and out of warranty repairs, engineers who work on the design of future products, others who do the work to put those designs into production, administrative people who do the billing, customer contact, purchasing of parts, accounting, filing tax returns, and so on. As a ham for 60 years, I've watched dozens of ham companies go out of business because they didn't understand their market, or priced their products too low or too high, failed to treat customers with respect, and so on. Ten Tec and Alpha are two formerly great US companies that have failed to make a profit and "reorganized." The remains of both companies have been acquired by companies 3-6 times removed from the originals, and the acquirers are trying to get going again. Both are skeleton operations, doing their best to service legacy products. I'm happy to pay Elecraft whatever Eric and Wayne think they need to stay in business, support existing customers, and continue to lead the industry. The level at which they have chosen to work ain't cheap. If you want a big discount, go to HRO's website and look at their "deal" on a TS590SG. 73, Jim K9YC On Fri,11/25/2016 1:04 PM, Paul Clay via Elecraft wrote: > Level of discount silly and not at all in keeping with the concept of a "Black Friday" sale, IMHO. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

We must remember that ham radio is pretty much a niche market; and for firms like Elecraft I don't think they have the big margins like the big boys like Icon or Yaesau have. Has anyone noticed the steady drop in price of the Icom 7300 since it was introduced at the beginning of the year? Makes you think what the true of the price is. $70.00 is not a lot but it might get that guy eyeing a K3s to to buy it with the knowledge that there will be another price drop next month (hopefully), Just my 2 cents. 73 Alan KK6WA From: "Phil Hystad" <[hidden email]> To: "Jim Brown" <[hidden email]> Cc: [hidden email] Sent: Friday, November 25, 2016 1:38:05 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft black friday Ditto!! > On Nov 25, 2016, at 1:34 PM, Jim Brown <[hidden email]> wrote: > > Think about it -- those who offer large discounts for special sales are not losing money, they have large markups built in, and are simply reducing them for that sale. And free shipping! That can be a big deal as well. I would rather not have the discounts, but more new great products.

Dear colleagues, I started this BlackFriday issue in an ironic way. But I
want to say that I am a proud owner of an Elecfat K3s radio and when I have needed technical support they have provided it to me in a timely manner. I want to break a lance for Elecraft and say that what several colleagues have said shows that there is customer satisfaction with the products. I apologize if I have disturbed anyone with my comment. Wow - what a friendly bunch! Kind of like some of the help I have
received over the past few years on this site and via private email. I can tell you that a few dollars off, when it comes to buying an expensive piece of equipment, will not make or break a deal for me. I either want the equipment, because it is able to suit my specific needs, or I do not. A few dollars one way or the other might be nice, but it will not influence my final choice. So far as Elecraft is concerned, when the chips have been down - I have ALWAYS received quick and accurate help from the factory. Sometimes by email and sometimes by phone. You will not get this one-on-one attention from the so called "big manufacturers." I am just not into squeezing pennies - I just desire great quality products! Just for the record, I keep hearing this argument on this reflector, but it seems like nobody ever backs this up with the specific issues. While I agree that Elecraft's customer service is outstanding, I have never had any problems with the customer service from the "big manufacturers" Yaesu replaced an OLED on my FTDX5K free of charge after 4 years and Kenwood fixed a problem with the ALC free of charge on my TS-590S sometime after the warranty expired. Someone will claim that they were morally (not contractually) obligated to correct the problems because these are know issues on both of these transceivers. Regardless, the point is that they provide the customer service when I needed it and they took responsibility for the problems. I know that there are folks who haven't had the same experience as me and I know that there will be some folks that have had negative experiences with Elecraft (i have seen some emails on this reflector) I believe that one can be a huge fan of Elecraft without losing objectivity. 73, Robert-KP4Y/W4 > > > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > Message delivered to [hidden email] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

Actually $70 off on this price of a K3S is not all that bad of a deal, but to sweeten the pot with free shipping anywhere in North America is even better. That could mean up to around almost $200 off depending on where you live.
Now I just have to wing that by the boss.... 73 De Mike VE3YF http://www.ve3yf.com [http://www.ve3yf.com/] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |
