FS: Astron RS-35A power supply

For Sale: Astron RS-35A power supply - 35 Amp linear supply, about 1 1/2
years old, excellent condition. Cost $150, will sell for $110, not
including shipping. I'd prefer to sell it to someone in the Boston,
southern N.H or western Massachusetts areas since at 27 lbs. the cost of
shipping may be prohibitive.

This is a great power supply that just loafs along powering my K2/100 -
but it's much more power than I need, and it's not quite practical to
pack in a suit case along with my K2 - I need to replace it with a
smaller, and much lighter, switching supply that's easy to take with me.

Do you know if it is a switching supply?  At 1.25 pounds,
I would guess that it probably is.  If so, have you heard any
rf trash from it?

Dick's recommendation is a good one.  I also have a Gamma and I love it.  It
is amazing how little room it takes when traveling - the power cord is
almost as bulky and heavy as the power supply!  It is of course more than
needed for the K2, but it will also power my IC-7000 at 100 W without any
problem.  Just terminate the supplied output cable with a PowerPole, and
you're good-to-go.  Small, light, quiet (both electrical and acoustic), high
quality.  Highly recommended!

It is a switching supply, Bob, but with an unusual twist.  It includes an
ultra-capacitor to handle peak load currents.  That is how they can deliver
100W for intermittent duty cycle applications such as CW and SSB.  In steady
state applications such as RTTY it is probably good for perhaps 60 W output.
Output voltage is 13.8 V, which is of course ideal for ham gear.  Check
their web site for more detail.   I have heard absolutely no RF noise even
with it sitting right next to a rig.

i HAD to check it out ,,,
so i looked  it's actually a 5 or 8 amp supply feeding the ultracaps,,,
I found the oem switcher in either mouser or digikey as well as the caps,,,,
gamma did a great job packaging it ,.,,,,
I also think a thinner ac cord would be in order,,,, for my
pelican/portable set.

and works fine with the k2-100 ssb or cw,,

I heard little rf noise, but the antenna was right at the rig,,,,,

I'd say that is "cost effective" design as long as the user is aware of the
limitations.  If speech compression is used extensively, then the average
current will rise and the psu might fold back to protect itself.
Interesting idea, certainly good for cw.  Lightweight is good for
dxpeditions.

Along similar lines I heard of a group that used small battery chargers and
locally borrowed batteries run from generators that proved effective.  It's
a similar idea, ie charge storage, like charging batteries from solar cells
over a long term then discharging in the short term.
