FT9000 vs the K3?

W7GJ, Lance
Hello!  I have a friend who is thinking about getting a rig to use at a
portable/remote mountaintop operating location and he is considering an FT9000.
He asked me to inquire whether anyone had any first hand comparisons between the
two of these.  Any comments or insights would be appreciated.  MNI TNX and VY 73,
Lance

But to be fair all FTDX-9000 owners are getting a very extensive free
hardware and software upgrade to the FTDX-9000PEP version. Initial reports I
have read state a 'night and day' difference.

I like the FTDX-9000 tuning dial a lot - nice and big and easy to find,
ideal for the terminally bewildered. :-)

Hi Lance,

Charles Harpole, K4VUD did the comparision few months ago and posted the
results here in two separate reports  - CW and SSB. You could see them in
the archive circa Sep-Oct 2008.

Are you sure? The FTDX-9000 is a monster radio - you'll need a fleet of
mules and support staff, failing that your very own Marine corp.

For portable the K3's the winner - you can lift the radio without ending up
in hospital.

There is a lot more to a radio but RX IMDDR3, seems
to me people tend to forget that.

A radio, at least the kind we talk about here, also
has a transmitter, don´t forget that!

Re: FT9000 vs the K3?

Hi OM,

First of all, you should ask this question both in FTDX9000 and K3 mail reflectors.  I believe you will get different answers.

For FTDX9000, you have to look for the latest version with PEP modification.  Otherwise, older version will disappoint you for sure and cannot be compared with K3 in any aspects.

Ok, back to your question.  K3 is excellent in its performance and specifications, good for both station and portable operation.  However, if you look for operation convenience, you may look for a bigger rig with bigger size + 200w + internal power supply unit.  This will be up to your personal preference.

One thing, I would like to point out that the price of a full option (adding up every bits) K3 is high end as well.  Of course, K3 will give you the full liberty to choose what options you would like.

If you have any question, please contact me OFF the list.
