Ya know, I've got the same problem... but I've tried everything (all
combinations of Mic and Line-in switch and cable routings). When I was on J6 a few weeks ago, I got RTTY going by running the audio right into the Mic jack on the front panel and turning the gain way down. It worked but I sure would like to get the "line-in" working. Any suggestions. BTW the same cable plugged into the mic jack (on the Heil adapter) doesn't work on the rear panel. Nor does anything else I plug into the "line-in". I have not fussed with it because I had a work-around. Dr. William J. *Bill,
Are you using any kind of "interface"? Many of them use attenuators to drop the line level audio to mic level. For use with the K3 and its line-in level, that attenuation must be bypassed. Until you indiacte specifics about your audio source and settings (there are a LOT of variations) we can only guess at the cause of your problem. My best guess is that you are using an interface that is set for Mic input, but are attempting to use the Line input of the K3. The mic input is a very low level, and the line input is about 10 times as great. Most interfaces have a jumper setting that will allow either mic level or line level input. For use with the K3 line in, set that jumper for Line Out level. 73, Don W3FPR * On 9/4/2012 10:38 PM, Dr. William J. I might add that if L5 (in the return lead) is open, the signal will
find alternate paths and cause "funny happenings" rather than a solid failure of no communications. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/4/2012 11:03 PM, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: >> BTW the same cable plugged into the mic jack (on the Heil adapter) >> doesn't work on the rear panel. The "primary" of the Line In isolation transformer is *floating* - there is no connection to "ground" other than through the small value (1000 pF) RF bypass capacitors. If *either* L4 or L5 is open, you will get no audio via Line In and if you do, there is a *serious* wiring error external to the K3 (and potentially inside the K3). Been there, done that, pulled out too much hair trying to find the problem. Since Line In is transformer isolated, the RF chokes seem to be a bit "overkill" ... Line In certainly showed no ill effects when both were replaced by jumpers on an emergency basis. By the way, I question the use of a 604 Ohm series resistor in the Line In. The 604 Ohm resistors were replaced by 51 Ohm resistors in Line Out to reduce IMD - one would think the same considerations would be applicable at Line In. 73, ...
