The reason we do our quoting manually is that many list-members are on very
slow or pay-by-the-kilobit connections, and all 'Crafters on the list are supposed to minimize the amount of text quoted. If I'd just let Outlook quote your note, 3,811 bytes would be appended below my sig. and the listserver additions would occur many times over the life of a thread. As it is done, only 138 bytes are. Admittedly, some postings are done more clearly that others<g>. It's only on mailing lists like this one where one has to be sensitive to the preferences of thousands of readers that I tighten up the responses. I've found when you are letting the entire conversation accumulate below your most recent entry, having it automatically indent or add > characters results in a real mess. By turning that option off I have more control. I prefer the quoting method above vs. the "Dan wrote..." method, but either way, as long as it gets cleaned up before it gets posted, it's good. I also prefer putting the brief quoted text ABOVE my reply, and quoting just enough to remind the reader what I'm responding to, as above. OTOH when leaving the entire conversation intact one should always reply above the previous posts, as has been pointed out (quite correctly) by our moderator here. I am all in favor of trimming the quoted text to an appropriate snippet, that was not my point. The point of my query was that regardless of how much of the quoted text is included in the reply, if there is no quote character in front of it, it is darn hard to see what is being quoted and what is the reply. Thanks, Paul ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------ Paul, My particular e-mail software just does not appear to do what you ask, only quotes any parts I happen to highlight on the original document. This shown at least to me as indented text as is your original message quoted at the head of this reply, but which unfortunately gets lost through the system. Also, which I think is even more important, try to keep the parts of the original included brief, only use the parts that have relevance to my reply. One day may find the method of doing what you ask to include the ">" characters and let you go away rejoicing. Conversely I find the use of continual ">" characters cloud the whole message with semi useless information that is even more frustrating when posters persist in adding the whole message when it is not really needed, plus *all* of any previous multiple replies with double and triple ">" characters. Must really use up Eric's storage space for the Reflector. It sometimes gets bewildering to search though such messages to find what the poster's reply actually is! In my case, it's because I'm reading the reflector online, via the
archives, so I have to paste in the text I'm quoting manually. The same would apply to those who receive the digests. Quoting an entire digest when replying to a post is extremely embarrassing, and I expect that a lot of people who get the digests turn off the quoting option to avoid doing it accidentally. Reply --------------------------------------------------- Since you used one of my posts as an example, I don't have to wonder if you've had trouble with my messages! I apologize. I, too, find the > distracting. It causes odd line breaks and makes the text hard to read for me. So I use a line across the text like above. One time recently I accidentally left it out, but it's supposed to be there. Does this help? Another reason is that if you receive the reflector in Digest Mode you
cannot just hit the 'Reply' button. You have to cut and paste the previous correspondence into a new email. Under these circumstances it is very hard to prefix each line with a '>' I do my best, and top post. -- 73s, Nigel ZL2DF ----------------- _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
