Feature request - CW PTT

Chris GM3WOJ
Hello all

Season's greetings.  Please can I request a feature be added in a future firmware release - namely PTT when on CW mode ?

For several reasons I prefer to use a footswitch when on CW - I was disappointed to discover that the K3 does not implement PTT when on CW mode.  At the moment, when you select VOX-OFF, the K3 is in TX-TEST mode rather than PTT.

This means that any input to the KEY socket e.g. a tap of the paddle (using an external keyer) or press of a PC keyboard key, results in the RX being muted and the rear KEY-OUT jack being activated, which causes the relays in an external PA to activate.

Are you sure about this? Mine does work - it would be impossible to operate VHF without it. The PTT I use is on the front panel wired to a footswitch and it does work in CW mode.

Sorry if I was not clear - yes the PTT inputs to the K3 behave as
expected, it is just the KEY OUT socket that behaves illogically -
there should be no output from it until the PTT/Footswitch is activated.

Hi Paul

I understand 100% the action of the KEY-OUT phono socket. What is puzzling me is why this socket switches anything when I am not using VOX on CW.

IMHO (and on every Japanese radio I have owned) *nothing* should happen at this KEY-OUT socket when in any 'PTT' mode, except when you want the KEY-OUT to do something, i.e. when you press the footswitch PTT or mic PTT button. The KEY-OUT socket should not go to ground if you tap the CW key or whatever - only when you activate the PTT.

It just seems illogical to me to have the only 2 options on CW as VOX or TX-TEST.

Hope I have explained things better this time....I'll keep trying...

I understand the explaination as the PTT acting illogical. And yes, no other rigs act like this. I believe this is a carry over from several years ago when an update was made that fixed an issue that even in PTT mode, if the key was hit it would actually transmit. Now at least it doesn't transmit but yes, the KEY OUT does close and it shouldn't; in PTT mode, it should just look at you until you press the PTT.

Maybe this discussion will jog Wayne's memory and he can have another look at it to see if it can be corrected.

Hi Terry W8ZN

'And yes, no other rigs act like this' - thanks for the sanity check, Terry.

I am a bit disappointed by the Elecraft response to this - Gary replied straight away when I e-mailed back in September, but Wayne did not reply to my e-mail.

I would prefer to be told 'none of the other 5000+ K3 owners care about this, so we are not going to sort it' than no reply.
