This is one of the prototypes of the Elecraft amplifier project, along
with the KPA1500. Neither was never offered for sale, but eventually led to the KPA500. It is not "new" and predates the KPA500 by a couple of years. 73, Scott, N9AA On 12/6/12 1:59 PM, Richard Gillingham wrote: > Does anybody know anything about this? They showed a KPA1500 along with the KPA800 at Dayton in 2006. I was
lucky enough to see them and they were quite impressive. 73, Scott, N9AA On 12/6/12 3:02 PM, Fred Smith wrote: > To bad it isn't a KPA1500 then might be time to replace my Alpha's. > > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
It was pretty sweet in person, but pics are still out there. See http://www.n6ie.com/Elecraft.html I was talking to Wayne at Dayton this past April, and asked about a higher power amp. I doubt we'll ever see one, but at least he didn't forclose the idea. It would be nice to have a 1500 watt RF deck in a K3-sized case, and a PS in a second case. 73, Lou, W0FK

Lou,
These early amp prototypes were a real learning experience for us. Our staff did an excellent job, and they worked very well. However, after sizing up the costs and risks, we decided to enter the market with something smaller (K3-size) featuring a zero-noise (linear) power supply based on a toroidal transformer. 500-600 W seemed like an ideal target, and there you have it: the KPA500. I certainly wouldn't rule out other amps in the future. Speaking of which, the upcoming KXPA100, our 100-W amp for the KX3 and other QRP rigs, draws extensively from the KPA500 design. We hope it will be the best-performing and most rugged 100-W-class amplifier available. 73, Wayne N6KR On Dec 6, 2012, at 7:32 PM, W0FK wrote: > Scott Manthe-2 wrote >> They showed a KPA1500 along with the KPA800 at Dayton in 2006. Hello Lou,
I think elecraft does pick up the right market segment for KPA500. The amplifier is conservatively designed and ready to give a bit more output. It is not too far away from the KPA800. 500 W is also marketable world wide. Legal limit in quite a number of former British colonies (like VR2) is still 400W though I know some hams do not care about this. 1.5kw amplifer will belong to another price tag and another market segment. I wonder, in term of profitability (i.e profit margin x trade volume), KPA500 could be a good performer. The majority of my operating, contesting and DXing is at the 100 watt level with my K3. BUT on 80 and 160 (even though I easily got WAC with 100 watts on 160) there are times that the 1000 or 1500 watts on 160 is needed. It may not be due to propagation but sometime ya just gotta have the smash to punch through the other guy's noise to get that QSO. Thus I have an AL1500 on the table that sees rare usage but its there when I need it. I would rather have a quality Elecraft there. My 2 cents. 73, Mike WA5POK ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

When I saw the KPA1500 at Dayton I drooled. I can still picture having the
amp remoted in the basement where my present Acom2000A sits on a shelf hanging from the ceiling and tied into my coax and control cable, lightning protection and grounding panel. Then just have a RCU in the shack like the Acom or the software on the screen to control the amp. I would really like a 1.5KW, instant-on, remote control, 160-6M amp. I have no negative issues with the 2000A. It is a wonderful amp and has given me years of great service. But I would like to also have an amp on 6M. And I still haven't heard another Zone 19 on Topband since the one time I heard one at my sunrise. I called and called at 100W while waiting for the amp to cycle on. By the time the 3 minutes passed the UA0 faded into the noise level. An instant-on amp might have given me success at making the QSO. 73, N2TK, Tony -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of W0FK Sent: Thursday, December 06, 2012 10:33 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Found this on Facebook this morning...
