Just completed building my K3 this week and taking a break from SB80M LP.
Something occurred to me.....There are no fuses in the K3 power cord. I use a commercial lab quality power supply. I use 30A inline fuses for K3/100. These are the same as used with
the Motorola two-way radios (Micor, Syntor / X). Fuses and the holders are also available from Mot parts. They are very robust (and also not cheap!). They splice directly inline with up to 6 AWG cable. And congrats on your shiny new K3! matt W6NIA On Sat, 19 Feb 2011 19:16:33 -0600, you wrote: >Just completed building my K3 this week and taking a break from SB80M LP. > >Something occurred to me.....There are no fuses in the K3 power cord. Thanks for that Phil. I bought the fuses at a swap meet for $4.50 for
a box of 12, but had to buy the inline MOT holders from MOT itself. Will look in RV supply stores from now on. Or at least if I ever burn one of these 30A or 40A cartridges. matt W6NIA K3 #24 On Sat, 19 Feb 2011 18:10:26 -0800, you wrote: >On 2/19/2011 5:52 PM, Matt Zilmer wrote: > >> I use 30A inline fuses for K3/100. Gary,
The K3/100 has a circuit breaker which will protect the K3 itself. Any fuse added will be to protect the power cord itself. Use whatever seems appropriate for you - 30 amps comes to mind. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/19/2011 8:16 PM, Gary K9GS wrote: > Just completed building my K3 this week and taking a break from SB80M LP. > > Something occurred to me.....There are no fuses in the K3 power cord. Hi Don,
I thought the CB protects only the HPA on the K3. I'll go back to the manual to be sure (but I'm pretty sure of this). Isn't there a resettable fuse for the non-HPA subs? Going back in memory, I seem to remember that. Sheesh! How could I forget? matt W6NIA K3 #24 seems a long time ago.... Matt,
You are correct, there is a resettable fuse for the non-KPA3 power. And those resettable fuses operate quickly. Still a fuse near the power supply is a good idea to protect the wire - but if the power supply has current limiting, and that current limit is reasonable for the wire size, a fuse may not be necessary. Like everything else -- it all depends. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/20/2011 12:16 AM, Matt Zilmer wrote: > Hi Don, > > I thought the CB protects only the HPA on the K3.
