Fuses in power cable

Gary K9GS
Just completed building my K3 this week and taking a break from SB80M LP.

Something occurred to me.....There are no fuses in the K3 power cord.  I
use a commercial lab quality power supply.  Does anyone use in-line fuses?

Re: Fuses in power cable

I use 30A inline fuses for K3/100.  These are the same as used with
the Motorola two-way radios (Micor, Syntor / X).  Fuses and the
holders are also available from Mot parts.  They are very robust (and
also not cheap!).  They splice directly inline with up to 6 AWG cable.

And congrats on your shiny new K3!

They are also available from any well-stocked auto or RV supply
store at a price much less than what The Big Emm charges.

Re: Fuses in power cable

Matt Zilmer
Thanks for that Phil. I bought the fuses at a swap meet for $4.50 for
a box of 12, but had to buy the inline MOT holders from MOT itself.
Will look in RV supply stores from now on.  Or at least if I ever burn
one of these 30A or 40A cartridges.

  Gary,

The K3/100 has a circuit breaker which will protect the K3 itself.  Any
fuse added will be to protect the power cord itself.  Use whatever seems
appropriate for you - 30 amps comes to mind.

Re: Fuses in power cable

Matt Zilmer
Hi Don,

I thought the CB protects only the HPA on the K3.  I'll go back to the
manual to be sure (but I'm pretty sure of this).

Isn't there a resettable fuse for the non-HPA subs?  Going back in
memory, I seem to remember that.  Sheesh!  How could I forget?

K3 #24 seems a long time ago....

Re: Fuses in power cable

Don Wilhelm-4
  Matt,

You are correct, there is a resettable fuse for the non-KPA3 power.  And
those resettable fuses operate quickly.  Still a fuse near the power
supply is a good idea to protect the wire - but if the power supply has
current limiting, and that current limit is reasonable for the wire
size, a fuse may not be necessary.  Like everything else -- it all depends.
