Fwd: K9W Wake Atoll DXpedition Has Been Approved - Hope To Be QRV This Weekend

Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ
Administrator
The K9W Wake Island Dxpedition is back on track and should be on the air this
weekend (Nov 3) if all goes to schedule.
(See announcement below and http://wake2013.org/index.html )

They are running K3s and KPA500's, so they should both sound great and have
sensitive ears!

Eric

Richard S. Leary
Keith,
Shouldn't be a problem for you. I used to run phone patches from there back
in 67-68 into Oregon mostly. Was KW6GB at the time. Heathkit SB300/400 at
180W to a 3el beam. Try it at 0100Z and later, 10, 15, or 20M depending
where they will be on freq. From CA, not a problem. Check out
http://wake2013.org/index.html - Good hunting folks. My K3 is ready. So is
the KPA500.

73,
Rick, W7LKG (KW6GB - Long Ago)

I am looking forward to sitting in the hot seat and driving the excellent K3 and KP500.

I am taking one of the K3s  home after the event. It will be my second.

Re: Fwd: K9W Wake Atoll DXpedition Has Been Approved - Hope To Be QRV This Weekend

In reply to this post by Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ
Good luck to the expedition and those that chase after it.

Personally, I never seem to do well in pileups.  Maybe lack of erp on my
part (on 23cm I do better, but I have more erp on that band) or a dislike of
the sort of behaviour that seems to grip some people when a really rare DX
country comes up on a band makes me want to just go somewhere else and do
something different?

On 6M I used to notice that, when there was a rare DX station on, you could
work other stations that would be covered in a pile up normally because
everyone was after the super DX station.

So, I'll be pleased to try to hoover up a few lesser DX stations whilst
everyone scrambles for Wake Atoll.  The fact that, even after being licenced
since 1982, I've barely made DXCC worked, let alone confirmed, will tell you
that I'm not in any sense of the word a "DXer".  ;-)

To missquote a well known saying, for me, DX isn't quite.

Eric I saw that in the Daily DX my main amp is down so I will be using my
KPA500 and make do with Less HP LOL. I only have K9W on 2 bands both SSB
will be trying to fill out on phone except for 160m, not a good enough
antenna for it......yet 8>)

It's times like these when I really enjoy my K3 with sub-receiver/P3 and now
using my KX3 for yet another receiver. Yet at times I still miss my 2nd K3 I
was using it in a SO2R setup.

What is super, ultra, incredibly cool is this: since they are using Elecraft gear and I am
in California, this means that there is a chance...that I can work them on SIX METERS!

W7GJ, Lance
Vic, they told me they are not planning to do anything on 6m.   However, if you are
interested in contacting KH9 on 6m, WA2YUN has a great station set up there. His
email is good on QRZ.com.   He has been there for a couple of years already....  GL
