Fwd: [SeattleRobotics] Re: Oven Controller by Sparkfun?

Kevin Rock
For all you folks who want to use surface mount devices in your next rig.
Here is a link to a controller for reflowing with a toaster oven.  It does
not have to be expensive to be embedded.
   Good luck,

Looks interesting, Kevin. The writer mistaking the rotisserie motor for an
"a-c transformer" didn't inspire a great deal of confidence though. Well, at
least he added a "?" suggesting that he wouldn't know a motor from a
transformer if one was in front of him <G>.

K1 3-digital display specs

Andrew Moore-4
In reply to this post by Kevin Rock
I'm trying to find specifications on the 3 digital LCD used on the
Elecraft K1, since I'm working on a custom application that involves
changing it over to a 3 digital LED.

Can someone provide the manufacturer and model information on this
display so I can locate the specs?

Thanks,
--Andrew, NV1B

Re: K1 3-digital display specs

Tom Hammond-3
Hi Andrew:

I'm working on a backlighting mod for the K1 and I just happen to have that
info...

The K1 manual specifies it as a V.L.
Electronics  VI-321-DP-RC-S-12  display. however that nomenclature is no
longer totally accurate. The VL web site can be found at:

      http://www.varitronix.com/

Apparently, Varitronix is the parent company for V.L. Electronics and this
is where the LCDs can be found.

The LCD currently sold by Elecraft for the K1 includes a 'transflective'
polarizer which both reflects ambient light AND will allow for a
rear-mounted backlight. In fact, I'm presently working on documenting a mod
to add backlighting to the K1 LCD display. Watch for it.

Hi Andrew:

I forgot to mention that Elecraft will be happy to sell individual LCD
displays to you from their current supply.  The Elecraft part number
is  E600015, and if I recall, the cost is about $6.50.

Hi Tom,
Do you make your own prototype PC boards or do you farm them out?  If
you make them in-house what are your tricks for double sided boards?  I've
made many single sided boards but the registration issue has prevented me
from attempting double sided ones.  I make them more for my robots than
for RF gear but soon the two will cross pollinate and my robots will
require layers of RF comm channels.  I've already got the neural networks
figured out so they can determine antenna orientation (wrt vertical) of
the sending channel.  Now I need to write a few algorithms to allow me to
phase the antenna arrays properly to point the nodes for best comms with
each other and with the mother ship.  Double sided boards would be very
nice as one off prototypes for this project.

Tom ..et al...

DOES.. from what I "think" I understand from the recent postings...  mean
that in theory,...
one could purchase the digital display unit, on its own...from Elecraft, or
the other company
that was specified...   and then proceed to "homebrew" a digi display for
use in other rig
projects..??

Of course,...there would need to be some sort of "Driver" board I suppose,
and perhaps a
few other boards to boot...!

"Wonder" if anyone on the list, has actually put together somedriver and
"other" boards that would allow a digital display to be made for use in
homebrew radios and equipment using this unit...?

VERY Interesting...! Indeed.... if I have this all correct in my head...
(I'm new at this..)

By The Way Tom...  The cd you so kindly sent me, arrived about a week or so
after you posted it.. can't remember if I e-mailed you or not... apologies
if I did'nt...  It came in very handy for my
friend with the 930s.... its all up n running, .... re-aligned...and working
the DX like a house on fire..

Thanky Bud... your truly a gentleman... appreciated....

Hooray! It is very annoying to sit in a campsite with plenty of battery
power available and have to keep flicking on my red flashlight to see the
display.

However, I'm not clear what you are saying. Are you saying you are working
on a mod to backlight the NEW K1 LCD that allows backlighting or is the mode
to backlight the older LCD display?

And that brings up the question:

Can the new K1 LCD be retrofitted to earlier K1's?

Interesting!  I have a transflective version of the display (and a
metal shaft pot :) just sitting here waiting for a few free hours.  I
didn't know the stock display could possibly already be transflective!
Unforch, while I did think ahead enough during assembly to mount one of
the caps that boarders the display on the other side of the board (inside
the MCU socket IIRC), I also seem to recall there being a rubber spacer in
there that isn't going anywhere while the display is soldered in :).  I'm
also curious what you're using as a light source / diffuser -- most light
bars are too thick, and I haven't been able to find any diffusers of the
right size .. I just figured I'd end up winging it with paper or a nip off
a plastic cutting board :).
