Got me - great marketing?

Joe Carter
Well I just heard about the KX3 in March - placed an order 3/31 only to hear the dreaded 90 - 120 days - signed onto this group and such a friendly and enthusiastic group I was hooked - have always heard such great things about Elecraft but it took this to convince me to sell some stuff including my well loved 1000MP and some other stuff and today I had enough to order a K3-100 also!
Now I have 2 kits to look forward to!
Thanks to all - I've learned a lot already.

Possible power supply option for the KX3

Ronald Nutter
In doing some research for a possible portable power supply for the KX3,
I found this option at a local Fry's that I am near while working an out
of state client -

http://www.frys.com/product/5872563?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

$30 for a 5.8 Amp power supply.  It comes with a Cigarette lighter plug
receptacle for the DC side.  While waiting for the delivery of my KX3, I
am thinking about either building a power cord for the KX3 that
terminates into a cigarette lighter plug or cut over the receptacle on
the power supply and use Anderson powerpole connectors.

In the mean time, wanted to let others know about this as a possible
option.  What I like about this particular one is that it is reasonably
compact and the max load presented by the KX3 only uses about 50% of the
power supply's rating.

Hope this helps someone,
Ron

Hi Joe,

You will not be disappointed. I am a newbie ham (17 months).and Elecraft owner (9 months).  The K3 has not disappointed! I own a fully loaded K3 serial #1391 and just bought a used less loaded K3 #1526 which will arrive at the homestead on Thursday. I also bought a KX3 on Dec 31st and am excited and waiting on its arrival. Almost full transition from Yaesu has taken place. You can hear the value!

Have fun!

I would not use a supply that was not designed/marketed specifically for radio use. RFI could be awful.

Re: Possible power supply option for the KX3

Raymond Sills
In reply to this post by Ronald Nutter
HI Ron:

On a quick look, this PS looks attractive, but my concern would be if
it is designed to power electronic devices.  Most of the write-ups
deal with people who are powering a 12V DC picnic cooler, where the
purity of the DC power is less of a worry.

I think there are better units available (electronic device capable)
in the same price range.  And, the more portable the supply is, the
more it can cost.  For my part, I like the Belkin U-Verse backup
UPS... SLA battery with a built-in charge controller.

I've looked at several small 2-5 amp switchers for possible use with my KX3
(whenever it arrives).  All have been pretty RF noisy.  I haven't looked at
the Fry's or Amazon units, but I'm a little suspicious and I'm getting tired
of spending money!!  So far, my Gamma HPS-1a seems to be the way to go.  It
is very RF quiet and it is tiny - and I have one.

I haven't got a KX3 yet but when I do I will power it the same way I power my KX1, my Norcal 40A, and even my K3 at times.  A rechargeable Li-ion nano-phosphate battery pack available from Buddipole.  The four cell variety is a very nice size for powering the small equipment like the KX1 or KX3.

The recharger unit is separate of course and I use the Cellpro 10s for recharging the battery.  I admit though that this is not the cheapest solution but cheap is not usually my main objective.

The Li-ion battery is very RF quiet!

Re: Possible power supply option for the KX3

Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy-3
Phil,

If of any help to you, I did use a Toshiba Laptop power supply to run my
K2's receiver continuously (i.e. 24/7) for almost 3 years in Scotland during
a propagation study.  This supply's output is stated to be 15 V DC, and its
current rating is 6A.

Because this supply's voltage output is not regulated, thus can increase
when the current demand decreases, I did add a voltage regulator set for
13.5V output between the supply and the K2.  I also placed the supply in a
fireproof box :-)

RF noise from this supply was not evident on the K2.  However the antennas
used during this project were a good 200ft distant from the house, and all
cables to the antenna "farm" ran underground.

Hi Phil,

I have been using a China switcher now for about 7 months.  It is a 13.1 VDC at 29 Amps unit in a very small package for about $48 US.  No RFI, has a built in fan, plugs into 120 VAC and if you didn't look you would not know it was there.  Just got back from a 10 day fishing trip and used it every day.  Look up LightObject.com.  They are in Elk Grove, CA and have a warehouse.  Tell them I sent you, no rewards or connections to me, just good service and they speak English, hi.

Phil,

I modified a 300W ATX PS from my junk box 5 years ago and using it
every day since with my K2 and K3. A lot of dxing and contests, not
a single issue.
The quality of the PC PS differs too much, but a good many of them
are not worse than the other swithers.

Well, I use a older Sony laptop supply rated at 15 VDC at 3A to run my FT817 QRP I put two silicon diodes in series on the output.  Been running for over 5 years now.  I modified a MFJ 16010-ST tuner to include a micromatch using a couple of old subminiture battery indicator meters.  Thats my QRP station until the KX3 arrives, hi.

Re: Possible power supply option for the KX3

Don Wilhelm-4
Mel,

That same supply should power your KX3 quite nicely.  You might even
remove the series diodes if the supply voltage is no greater than 15
volts (hint - measure the no-load voltage with your DMM).

Most of those supplies are switchers, but if you have not had a problem
with RF noise on your FT-817, the KX3 should not introduce any
additional ones - note that noise conducted onto the DC input is quite
another issue.  I have not tested my KX3 with other than a clean and
stiff power supply, but my experiments with DC receivers indicate that
they do not do well if there is conducted RF energy riding in on the DC
input.

In reply to this post by Mel
An ATX power supply is not the best of choices.  PC power supplies often
regulate on the low voltage outputs for the processor, and the higher
voltage outputs are slaved to that.  Without a suitable load on the main
output, the voltage regulation on the other outputs can be very poor.
