Good luck finding an answer - I asked and was quickly told "it works for
me" by someone.

It is not working here - neither on my Windows machines or Linux
machine. Used to work - until a few days ago - then nothing.

I sent an email to Elecraft - no reply.

Oh well, my K-Line is working well for now.

It is working on my patch of the 'net.   Usually when some can get the site,
and some not, DNS servers are often the culprit - not updated yet, still
being updated, etc.

Give it a day or two and you should have it working for you as it is for me
here in Northern CA.

Just tested it here and the link works on my iPhone. In general if the link fails for some the problem is not with the site. It's more likely a temporary internet routing problem.

Note that both the mail-archive and Nabble archives are run by independent outside parties and not by us.

At the end of every message we get:

Since for many of us this time of year is when we do our major
donations, consider sending a few dollars toward the people who
support this list.

The link has remained unchanged for a very long time on my desktop. May
be a problem with ISP - that is the only thing that would explain why
some get it and others do not.

At this time, I get no mail-archive pages at all.

Re: Has this link been changed?

Try this link:

http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@.../
<http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@.../>

The original link works fine but the above is better formatted.

Worst case, go to http://www.mail-archive.com
<http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@.../> and search for
elecraft in the search box.

The link on your desktop is simply a URL.  All that works in the
Internet are IP addresses.  There is a translation between URL's and
real IP addresses, it happens in the Domain Name Servers around the
world.  An update used to come out once a day, don't know now, but the
DNS talk to each other and the update propagates around the world.

While still employed, we were doing a data center move for Wells Fargo
Bank.  While in Phoenix at a bunch of meetings, my pager [that tells you
how long ago] was giving me really strange and unlikely phone numbers.
I had a new Palm Pilot 0.0, I started putting them into the Find screen,
and Mike [Network Chief] in San Francisco at Wells Fargo came up.

Turned out, wellsfargo.com had disappeared from the I'net [generally a
bad day if you're a worldwide banker].  My employer had recently
purchased Network Solutions Inc., at that time the only I'net domain
registrar and updater of the DNS network, and as luck would have it, one
of my colleagues happened to be in N. VA at NS.  I called him, and they
fixed it with that night's update.  Took 2 days to propagate around the
planet.

I doubt it's your ISP.  Give it a little time before blaming them.

Re: Has this link been changed?

David Woolley (E.L)
DNS changes don't propagate.  However the results of DNS searches do get
cached.  In principle, when you make a request, the request is routed to
the name server for the domain in question, and to get there, requests
may have to be made for higher level name servers, up to the root level.
In practice, requests are normally made through the ISPs caching name
server, so, if someone else has accessed the name recently, the query
will be satisfied from there.  That means that very few requests ever
get sent to the root level servers, but the .COM ones may still be quite
busy.

DNS entries have a lifetime associated with them, and cached entries
which are older than that lifetime are ignored, and the request
forwarded towards the definitive server.

A competent system administrator will reduce the lifetime down to
minutes, a day or two before making any planned change, so that the
change will take effect very quickly.
