I noticed this weekend that Elecraft had updated the firmware (not beta) back in February. So, today, I thought I would try to update mine.
However, it fails during the FPF load EVERY TIME: 17:12:09 K3 boot loader is ready for MCU firmware load. RS-232 38400 bps. 17:12:09 New firmware is available for your K3 17:12:17 K3 boot loader is waiting for MCU firmware load. 17:12:17 OS X Revision 10.9.2 17:12:21 Sending firmware file "hmcu0483b.hex" to MCU 17:13:49 Loaded MCU firmware revision 04.83 K3 responded with revision 04.83 17:13:49 MCU firmware load is complete 17:13:50 Erasing Flash Memory 17:13:54 Sending firmware file "hfpf0115.hex" to FPF 17:14:16 Send FPF firmware failed at load addresst 43 17:14:19 FPF firmware load failed 17:14:21 K3 MCU revision 04.83. RS-232 speed 38400 bps. 17:14:21 Ready As you can see, the MCU load works. However, once it gets to the “Sending firmware file “hfpf0115.hex” to FPF, it never makes any progress, and appears to time out after about 30 seconds. I’ve tried power cycling, and I must I have tried it a dozen times over. I would really like to be able to use my K3!! I’ve never had trouble with firmware updates before, and I’ve never even tried the beta firmware. PS - the specific error I get is:
“FPF Programming Failed. “Verify file source and revision. Turn the K3 off and back on, then re-try the firmware load.” I’ve re-downloaded the files from Elecraft a couple of times using the K3 Utility. I’ve powered off and on many times. Suggestions?? Ouch.
Maybe try deleting the firmware files from your computer and then download them from Elecraft and try again? I think I've heard that sometimes files can get corrupted when being downloaded. Bill,
Try this - first download the latest K3 Utility and get the new firmware files as usual (Check for New Firmware). Then using the Advanced tab of K3 Utility, Check the DSP1 box and click "Load checked firmware". When that completes, do the same for the FPF loading only that firmware. After you do that, you can exit from the Advanced screen and the Send all Firmware to the K3. Let us know if that works. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/31/2014 5:31 PM, Bill Coleman wrote: > PS - the specific error I get is: > > “FPF Programming Failed. > > “Verify file source and revision. Yes, if course I’m using a USB/Serial adapter. This is a MacBook, after all. I don’t have one of a different type handy. It’s just weird that the MCU firmware downloads 100% ok each time, but the FPF does not. Why that would be a serial port problem is beyond me…. Unfortunately, Macs have never had COM ports, and have lacked “real” serial ports since about 1999. Hmmm ... OK Bill. Here's my experience, yours may vary for a variety of
reasons but for what it's worth: I've never had a Mac and know nothing about them. I *have* had occasional problems with the uploads from my Windoze XP and subsequently Windoze 7 laptops. So far, in all cases, methodically deleting the downloaded HEX files [actually all the files], reverting to the previous version of the K3 Utility ... if I had upgraded since the last firmware update ... pretending like I'd never done a download and doing it for the first time, and it has worked, except once. I wish I knew why. I don't update firmware much, usually only if I have a good reason to. Consequently, I'm not exactly an expert at this. Your problem sure doesn't sound like OS or USB-Serial adapter. Obviously the MCP load worked. Normally the utility loads all the files, one after another, in an order that I guess makes sense. I did once have to uncheck the FPF and MCP box [after the MCP loaded], and do the DSP alone followed by the FPF. That worked, and I think the reason was that in loading the FPF, it was looking for a response it would get from the DSP which would only come if the new version was loaded. Or something like that. If I sound like I know what I'm talking about, you've misread me. :-) Hope you can find the issue, please post to the reflector, it could affect a lot of folks. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 3/31/2014 6:59 PM, Bill Coleman wrote: > > Yes, if course I’m using a USB/Serial adapter. One place to find old FW versions is the beta archives on your own computer. Betas are same as released FW with same number. I think Elecraft also has old beta FW on beta site.

I have successfully un-bricked my K3.
No attempt to load 4.83 would work. Even after updating to the current version of the utility and trying a different USB/Serial device. However, I was able to successfully load the 4.67 firmware. After I did that, I did a Send New Firmware to K3 operation, and it upgraded smoothly to 4.83. I suspect something was out of sorts after my first attempt to load firmware using an old version of the utility. (I did not realize it was an old version at the time) Somehow, it was prohibiting even subsequent loads of 4.83 firmware. I’m very happy to have my K3 back! Excellent! I'm very glad to hear that, Bill.
