Help: K3 - 2 Mic (VFOA and VFOB) 2 Computers N1MM

Jim Balls - M0CKE
Hi all,

I'm sure this has been achieved already somehow but i'm not sure how.

What I would like to do for contest purposes is be able to have "Big Knob" man using K3 VFO A with a head set on a laptop with N1MM and when he presses his foot swich he transmits on VFO A and the PC autocaller in N1MM operates the radio DVR  (all operation and working now, no problems)

But then I would like "Little Knob" man on VFO B (SUB RX) using a seperate head set and laptop with N1MM and when he presses his foot switch the K3 moves into Split mode to TX on the sub VFO frequency. Once this is completed and the auto caller / Main VFO man transmits the K3 reverts out of Split mode.

I would like 2 laptops using N1mm to be connected to the K3 but both recieving the VFO data / control via CAT.

I can network 2 versions of N1MM without a problem so both are logging etc etc.

Any ideas as i'm scratching my head with this one.

Thanks

  Jim,

Because an RS-232 serial connection is point to point, you cannot
connect 2 computers to the K3.  Yes, SteppIR and a few other devices can
use a "Y" cable on an RS-232 because they only "listen in" on the serial
data, they never transmit data.

So that is the first obstacle that you will have to overcome.  Once you
have accomplished that feat, the other parts should come easier.

That's a new idea from the distant past -- two operators on one
radio. For the last 20 years or so, the more serious (crazier?)
contesters, me have been working on learning how one operator can
use two radios. In the last year or two, I've been working on
this, and it's a real brain-stretcher, especially for a sexy
senior citizen. :)

I haven't investigated this completely, but I think I might have a
suggestion that would accomplish the same thing using a single desktop
computer (or a single laptop with an external monitor port):

a.  Connect two USB keyboards to your computer.  I've tried it and N1MM
will respond equally to either one.

b.  Connect two monitors to your computer (requires a dual monitor video
card).  Position the N1MM call entry and bandmap windows for VFO A in
monitor 1 and the N1MM windows for VFO B in monitor 2.

c.  Operator B uses the pause/break key to switch N1MM windows, which
also puts the K3 into SPLIT mode for transmit on VFO .   Operator B can
then change frequency on VFO B using UP/DOWN keys or Up/Down Arrow keys
(or, of course, by spinning the VFO B knob on the K3), and transmit from
VFO B using N1MM macro keys.  Either operator can hit the pause/break
key on their own keyboard to change the active window back to VFO A and
take the K3 out of SPLIT.

d.  You'd have several choices for audio depending on cabling and how
L-MIX-R has been set in the K3 config menu.  Options (b) and (c) allow
better teamwork.

       a.  Operator A hears only VFO A in both ears and operator B hears
only VFO B in both ears.
       b.  Operator A and Operator B both hear VFO A in their left ear
and VFO B in their right ear with equal volume
       c.  Using an inexpensive external audio mixer (less than 50 USD),
Operator A hears VFO A in both ears at normal volume and VFO B in right
ear at reduced volume, while Operator B hears VFO B in both ears at
normal volume and VFO A in left ear at reduced volume.

I don't have the DVR for my K3 so I'm not sure how to integrate it into
this suggestion, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't possible.
