>I've been using a 30 year old RS VOM for basic continuity checks and voltage checks (AC mains, batteries), but those in the know say NO NO NO....get a DMM. Your VOM is probably adequate for what you need in assembling the K3. "7. Digital Multimeter (DMM) for voltage and resistance checks." Remember that the K3 boards have already been tested and calibrated by Elecraft. You really just need some simple measurements to verify that you did not make major mistakes in assembly (e.g. pinched wires, etc.) If you really feel you must have a DMM, I doubt you need much more than the most basic unit. 73, Bill W4ZV P.S. As a former GM of HP's division responsible for DMMs, I should suggest you spend $8k for a 3458A. :-) http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/product.jspx?cc=US&lc=eng&nid=-536902435.536881781 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I teach electronics to high school students. School district budgets are
puny. School kids are great beta testers for tool vulnerabilities. I've used Flukes here for 20 years and at the aerospace plant where I worked for 25 years. Need I say more? They have models under $100 - check the catalogs. Having a C tester and Transistor/diode tester built in is invaluable. Who calibrates it? Mark AD5SS _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. i managed to mangle the input jacks on my fluke 87,,,,,
i think it costs 4$ to replace the part.....a reparable device !!!! ( while it costs more than the 3$ meter...i like my 87As) ps DO change the batt when the batt symbol lights up . more than once I've had funky measurements before i realized the batt was low. bill _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I lucked out several years ago at Sears and found a combination digital/analog meter. Has all the usual DMM functions, plus an analog movement. Wonderful for peaking, etc! Unfortunately, I think Sears has discontinued it(naturally), haven't seen anything similar for quite some time. Perhaps other sellers have something similar, but haven't noticed one. Only real complaint is that it has captive test leads and if one fails it would require ripping into the unit to repair it. In it's favor, it does have a hard case/cover which can also act as a tilt stand. Not much help at this point, but might be of interest to some. 73, John W4CWZ -- "The real proof that there is intelligent life in outer space is that they haven't come here." _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
