Greetings everyone. I ordered a K3/100 in kit form last week. I should have it this week. Just wondering how long it should take to assemble it?? Guess this is very different from my Heathkit days..
Thanks in advance and a very Happy & Healthy New year to all on the list.. 73 Steve/k2we Saratoga Springs, NY ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
It took me 8 hours and I did not rush. I think the average is about 8 hours.
I found it fairly easy although I forgot to put in one screw and had to take the front panel board thing off and do it again. But, that only cost me about 15 minutes. 73, phil, K7PEH K3 Serial #3799 On Jan 1, 2012, at 1:00 PM, [hidden email] wrote: > Greetings everyone. I ordered a K3/100 in kit form last week. It largely depends on your skill level and organization skills. I had mine up and running in under five hours with regard to actual assembly and calibration time. Parts inventory, layout and reading the assembly manual took an additional two hours. So, eight hours is a reasonable estimate for the average to advanced kit builder.
Of course, fully enjoying the product will take the rest of our lives. :-) 73 - John - N6VCW ________________________________ From: Phil Hystad <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Cc: [hidden email] Sent: Sunday, January 1, 2012 1:04 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] How Long will it take to assemble a K3/100?? 8 hours seems to be the consensus! Just be sure to sort all the parts before you start...there are a lot of them! Did mine with another ham over two weekends, and it was just over the 8 hours! But we didn't hurry

I have assembled two, and I'd allocate about 8 hours in no fewer than two sessions. inventory the small fasteners into some sort of containers and watch out for minor screw size differences and use the one described in the assembly instructions rather than the one just like the previous screw. The instructions are excellent and complete. Pay attention to details.
I sat next to Cody Adams at the Watsonville factory and watched him build a factory assembled unit. He does it a LOT quicker, with no compromises in build quality. He has all the small fasteners in trays, power screwdriver set for the right torque, and is really set up for mass production. Hi Dick,
As an owner of a 3 year old factory built K3 I kind of knew that they used "power screwdrivers" in the assembly. One day I plan to perform surgery on the one remaining front panel screw that I was unable to remove. Doing the DSP board swap was an adventure. 73, Mike K2MK

Got mine last January. It took me 2 football playoff games plus about 1
hour. Works great. I now have a P3 and KPA500. A lot less time for them. Steve,
Took me two days, probably 10hrs or so in total. Be sure to check all errata for every building manual. 73 Arie PA3A Op 1-1-2012 22:00, [hidden email] schreef: > Greetings everyone. The power screwdrivers we use in the factory are high performance commercial units that have a finely adjustable torque clutch that limits how far each screw is tightened. This insures both a consistent assembly of the radio and that the screws are never overtightened.
We set it at a very low setting that is in fact lower than what most average people would manually tighten screws to. This actually is more reliable than manually tightening each screw. We carefully check this and also inspect assembled units for over-tightened screws. Most, if not all, consumer level power screwdrivers can not be set for this low of a tightening torque, if they can be set at all. 73, Eric www.elecraft.com _..._ On Jan 1, 2012, at 7:56 PM, "Ron D'Eau Claire" <[hidden email]> wrote: > 4-40 screws are really quite easy to twist in half with a power screwdriver. > That's easy to fix if you have a spare. There was a YouTube video still linked on the Elecraft site that showed that it took 7 minutes Ha Ha but its has sadly been removed by its owner. id say Under 10 hours if you have only basic skills in assembly. One great thing is that the manual seems to be very good and is created for the experienced and inexperienced all the way.

It's still there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDfBJX3w504 Maybe Elecraft removed the link. 73, Bill |
The YouTube video is cute but not sure it is really helpful.
What I did find helpful was the compilation of construction tips on the old K3 Wiki, which has sadly been shut down. Barry N1EU |
*Ron,
No doubt a major part of their success is the well written assembley manual...:-) now I wonder who wrote it? 73 Gary * On 5 January 2012 03:34, Ron D'Eau Claire <[hidden email]> wrote: > Many "tips" that have come in over the years have been incorporated into > the > K3 Kit Assembly manual. > > Build the K3 just like you walk, one step at a time, and it will go right > together.
