I think it would be helpful to know what subscribers feel are the ideal
settings for TX on the K3. I have set compression and mic gain sort of by trial and error, so maybe we can start a thread about where folks have determined to be the ideal settings for COMP and MIC GAIN, and TX equalizer. (I have the KPA100 installed, and use the Heil ProSet Plus.) I have seen a few blogs with some of this information, but there is not a wide variety of mics, for example, used. Robert,
All voices and mics are different. I adjust mine first by listening to myself and what I would like to hear like. Then I ask my on the air buddies that know me off the air and then readjust again. :-) Giving you my numbers would be worse than starting at default and adjusting to your preference. 73, Bill K9YEQ K2 #35; KX1 #35; K3 #1744; mini mods ATS-3B -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Robert Klein Sent: Monday, November 02, 2009 2:50 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] Ideal TX settings? There are NO ideals. Every mic and voice are different.
Follow the manual as for as ALC readings are concerned. On compression, less is better than more -- although I have to admit, that you can push the K3 compression pretty hard before you start sounding like a South American contester. Still, less is better. But there's an indicator, and manual recommendations for that as well. EQ is just too much related to mic.voice to believe that anyone else's settings are going to match you needs. Use the monitor, get on-air comments. The other guy's great sounding settings may well leave you sounding like a castrated hamster at the bottom of a 55 gallon drum. I'm not terribly sure what that would sound like, but it's probably not good :-) Grant/NQ5T On Nov 2, 2009, at 2:50 PM, Robert Klein wrote: > I think it would be helpful to know what subscribers feel are the > ideal > settings for TX on the K3. > > I have set compression and mic gain sort of by trial and error, so > maybe we > can start a thread about where folks have determined to be the ideal > settings for COMP and MIC GAIN, and TX equalizer. Please. Let's not do that. It could go on forever! Put the K3 in test mode, so you aren't transmitting. Then follow the instructions in the manual while listening to the monitor with head phones, MAKING SURE YOU DON'T EXCEED THE SETTINGS RECOMMENDED IN THE MANUAL. When you are finished you will have a clean signal that sounds like YOU want it to sound, not the way someone else wants you to sound.
