Is there a thread that looks at options for external amps for the K2? If I use an external amp, do I also need an external tuner? I want to get an amp, and getting the internal amp seems like the most sensible way to go, but I'm also thinking that an external amp I could use for other radios in the future might be the better solution. Are there off the shelf 100w amps that might fit the bill? I see Ten Tec's new amp is $700+....not going to happen at that price.

Steve,
You will have to wait for the KX3 external amplifier. The plan is for it to work with other QRP transceivers too. You can also use any linear amplifier. For instance, the KPA500 will provide greater than 100 watts output from a QRP K2. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/11/2012 8:39 AM, Stephen Roberts wrote: > Is there a thread that looks at options for external amps for the K2? Hi, Steve...I had a K2/100 (100 internal) which I stupidly sold off in a
fit of (Flex) techno-lust. It was a very nice little rig, though the 100 watt add-in does make for a very compact, space-filing, even crowded, little riglet,. If you look thru this site's archives, you will find at least one thread in which the add-in is put into a separate box. You might be interested in that variation. It is not quite so simple as just putting a box around the amp, however. HFPacker version 4 gets you 35 watts out - this is a kit and will work with any QRP rig - cost is 259 USD KPA100 is internal to the K2/100 (essentially a new top) - check the Elecraft price list - will only work with a K2 - this is what I have. Juma PA100 is a very nice 100 watt linear for about 460 Euros and will work with any rig Or you can wait for the KXPA100 which will work with any QRP rig Ariel NY4G Sent from my iPad On Jun 11, 2012, at 8:49 AM, "Stephen Roberts" <[hidden email]> wrote: > Is there a thread that looks at options for external amps for the K2? Why do folks say only with K2? Can't it be modified?

The KPA100 is dedicated to the K2. It needs to communicate with the K2
MCU to select the proper band, control the power output level as well as a myriad of other functions. While it could feasibly be modified, it would be a considerable task to do so, and would require adding new firmware with more smarts than available in the existing KPA100 firmware IC. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/11/2012 12:44 PM, hawley, charles j jr wrote: > Why do folks say only with K2? Modification would be quite the chore.
The KPA100 talks to the K2 over the aux bus using proprietary telemetry protocols. Otherwise the 100 watt amp could not be used stand-alone. One common enough separate-from-K2-enclosure method is to put the KPA100 and KAT100 in a separate EC2 project box. This still works because the K2 communicates to the KPA100 in the separate EC2 box via the auxbus in the connecting control cable. I have that arrangement here. Very slick and behaves just as if they were in the same box. That way I get to keep the battery operation at 10 watts and station operation at 100. The same jack on the back of the K2 feeds both RS232 to the computer and auxbus et al to the KPA100. 73, Guy.
