Inventorying a K3/P3

NK7Z
Hi,

I am about to take a look at a K3 which a SK estate has asked me to sell
for them.  It was a friend of mine, for of many decades that passed, and
his children and wife have now decided to sell the K3/P3.

I need to inventory the K3 to see what all is in it...  Aside from the
obvious, and what I know about the rig, (I helped him go over the rig
when he got it, and before he purchased it), are there any tell tail
signs in the configuration menu I should look for?

What I know is the following:

K3, with second receiver
New synths in it for each RX.
10 MHz input for external reference.
Elecraft has gone over it and put the gold contacts in it.
Early serial number

I will be visiting the rig later this week, so I am looking for any
tips...  Private email is fine if you don't want to clog up the reflector.

I had thought of sending it to Elecraft and have them look it over for a
list of items, but with the extended return times of late, I think I'll
advise the family to wait a bit on that option.

It was just at Elecraft less than a year or so ago, and blessed by them,
so it should still be in good shape...  Anyway, if you can think of
things to look for, I am all ears...

Dave,

This topic was recently covered either here or another reflector I
subscribe to.

There isn't a very good way to properly find all the options installed
other than pulling the cover to see. There are two programs that may
help: The Elecraft K3 Utility program and K3_EZ:

Re: Inventorying a K3/P3

Rick Bates, NK7I
Dave,

The menu settings would be a good place to start, confirmed by taking
the cover off.  One receiver is covered by the other, so some
disassembly is required for the visual of the filters.  Then tuner,
which i/o board etc.

For the P3, the options are the SVGA board and the TX board.

Sorry for your loss,
Rick NK7I

Re: Inventorying a K3/P3

Brian Hunt
Dave,
There have also been numerous component adds/mods over the years. Three that I did a couple years ago are 1. Increase the 12vdc accessory power from 500 ma to 1 A. Evidence is a 1A sticker on the rear of the K3. 2. Add a capacitor to the KPA3 to eliminate fan noise pickup evident after the new synthesizers are installed. 3. Addition of a capacitor to the KBPF3 general coverage BPFs to extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the mod instructions available on the Elecraft site if you go sleuthing inside the box. These are a bit inconsequential but add value to the K3.

Have you thought about asking Elecraft for the work orders for the K3’s S/N?

Good luck and thank you for helping out the family. Sorry you lost a friend.

73,
Brian, K0DTJ

Re: Inventorying a K3/P3

Hi Brian,

Thank you for the suggestions, and the tidbits of the additional steps
for add on items like new synths, etc.  I have saved your email.

I have sent Elecraft three seperate email requests across three weeks,
and gotten precisely zero replies from [hidden email] address...

Very dissapointing, not even an acknoledgment they got the mail...  It
is like firing email into a black hole...

I just resent the 4th request, this time to sales, support, and
webmaster in hopes I can get in touch with someone at the Elecraft!

I understand things are busy, and I understadn things are diffucult to
to COVID, etc., but three weeks, and three requests later I am getting
very frustrated.

Re: Inventorying a K3/P3

Julia Tuttle
I wouldn't go so far as to call them "dolts" -- Elecraft *is* currently
running far behind reasonable expectations for turnaround time, and asking
for an update is a reasonable response to that.

I'm happy to cut them some slack, and I hope others will be as well, but
it's a lot easier to do that patiently when we (a) know our emails will
actually get a response and (b) know how long to expect things to take.

Re: Inventorying a K3/P3

Geert Jan de Groot

Hi,

First off, sorry for your loss.

As to options, and especially modifications, I very much would like
Elecraft to give each modification a number so there can be a sticker in
a radio that says:

This radio has the following modifications: 01, 02, 03, 04, 06, 08, 12.

That would make these things much easier.

For K2, K3, and the KX-en too late, but perhaps for the K4 this can and
should be done?

Geert Jan

Hi Dave;
Since it was here less than a year ago, no need to send it for updates.
If it hasn't been altered, you can get all the options/filters from the
menus.
If it has been reset for some reason, we can send you the configuration
file to re-load that was saved at last service.

We don't inventory every radio, but you could load that file into the
radio and then go thru the menus.
This would be a fairly accurate list unless you believe he
removed/changed any filters or options, in which case you will have to
open it up and take out the Sub receiver and open the sub receiver to
inventory all items.

Someone could also load that file into another radio (I believe it is
advanced mode of the K3 Utility lets you skip past the serial #
mismatch) then look thru the menus. Don't forget to save the host
radio's config file before doing this so you can restore it!

Keith,

First off, thank you very much for the reply!  I do appreciate it greatly!

That is the info I needed!  I now know the menus will give me most of
what I need.  As far as I know the radio has not been reset, nor has
anyone been in it!  That makes things a lot simpler!  I do thank you
sir!  Take care, and and stay safe!  Again, thank you.

73, and thanks,

Evidence is a 1A sticker on the rear of the K3. 2. Add a capacitor to the KPA3 to eliminate fan noise pickup evident after the new synthesizers are installed. 3. Addition of a capacitor to the KBPF3 general coverage BPFs to extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the mod instructions available on the Elecraft site if you go sleuthing inside the box. These are a bit inconsequential but add value to the K3.
