I'm looking for advice/experince again. I don't really work much on either 17
or 15, so I would like some advice. The best unsolicited advice has said: 1) There is a lot of local activity (depending on your locality) on 17 on SSB. Can the same be said about CW? 2) 15m is an excellent DX band when it is open. Is it open often enough to justify dedicating 1/4 of the band capability of the K1-4 to? David,
my experience is that 17 is a very fine band, cw as well as ssb. I really like it because a lot of times, when 15 is not open, 17 is going like gang busters; anytime 20 sounds good, try 17; its great; in fact I bought the extra 2 bands for my 4 band K1, to add 80 and 17. If one could add another band to the KX1, I would pick 17; its just a very fine band in my opinion. 73 de W5SV, Dave David Toepfer wrote: >I'm looking for advice/experince again. Always seems busiest here - when there is a BIG Competition on, but I personally would not give it up for 40 or 80 - take 15 instead... Dave,
One thing to remember is that if you operate any of the contest with your K1 you are taking away a band option if you go with 17 meters. No contest allows 17 meter operation---all include 15 meters. This is true for the purely qrp events i.e. qrp to the field, zombie hunt, etc. If these events don't appeal to you---17 meters would probably be your best choice(more openings) during this segment of the sun spot cycle. Unfortunately, the cw portion of 17 is way underused! It is really a "great" cw/qrp band and we all need to use it more than we do presently!! I personally have the Four band module set up for 40, 30, 20, 15 and am building a 80/17 two bander, or at least I have the parts:-) I think you will be please with whatever choice you make!! cu es 72, Bart > David Toepfer wrote: > > >I'm looking for advice/experince again. I would go with 15M, especially if you have any interest in contests or
awards. While 15M is quiet right now, it won't be too long before things will be hopping. Set it up for 17. If you don't like it, change it to 15. No big deal.
I set mine up for 17 initially, but I didn't hear a single CW qso in a month of listening, though I heard a total of two SSB qsos on another rig. In 15 or 20 minutes, I converted it to 15 meters. It's what works for you that matters. 17 meters is only nice if you are NOT a contester. More activity
is usually on 15 meters. I tried 17 meters and quickly changed to 15 as more going on there and you can use it for 15 meter QRP nets and contests. Take your pick. 73, Sandy W5TVW ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Toepfer" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2005 12:33 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K1-4 last band (15/17) choice help | I'm looking for advice/experince again.
