K1 Main Tuning Lock

Art - W6KY
Another menu item?
How about a 'main tuning lock'? When using the memory buttons on the
K1 it is very easy to 'touch' the main tuning knob and you are up/down
the band somewhere. This would be useful when calling CQ in a contest
or in my case tonight, I had just sent my call with Mem 2, 3D2XX came
back, my fat finger was still there and as I went for my paddle I brushed
the main tuning knob. . . most rigs have a main tuning lock...The K1
menu system is so easy this would be a great item right below OUT.
Any thoughts?

Hi Art,

I also find the K1 VFO pot too easy to turn, even when I turn it intentionally.  I placed some hand cut felt washers between the front panel and the back of the VFO knob to add some stiffness.

That doesn't provide what you ask, but it is a crude way to help in the absense of a lock feature.

Re: K1 Main Tuning Lock

I used a thick piece of leather (about 1/8") cut in a disk same size as knob.
Works great.  I couldn't find any felt thick enough!  Normal "pool table" baize
is not thick enough.  Where does one get thick felt?  (Besides the brim of an
old "smokey bear" campaign hat!)

Sandy,

I made several thin felt washers out of sheet felt that you can find in the sewing supplies at places like "Hobby Lobby."  That allowed me to put in layers to get just enough resistance with the VFO knob fully seated on the shaft.

Re: K1 Main Tuning Lock

Don Brown-4
Hi

Check out your local hardware store for large stick on chair glides. These thick felt disks are normally used to prevent chair legs from marking floors. You can drill a hole in the center of them and stick one on the front panel over the VFO shaft. If it is too thick just split the felt with a knife.

As to providing a tuning lock, the K1 uses the pot to directly control the voltage to the varactor diodes. The capacitance of the diodes control the frequency of the VFO. There is not a simple way to provide an electronic lock because the MPU does not control this voltage as in the K2. So some sort of friction lock on the VFO pot is the only easy way to do this.

BTY On an earlier post I stated the K1 has a self resetting fuse. I was wrong, the K1 does not have this fuse. The K2 and the transverters have the self resetting fuse. I guess I was having a senior moment. <G>

Sandy:

I stole some felt my XYL had obtained at a hobby store (Hobby Lobby, I
think) and cut a couple thicknesses of it to replace the real felt washer
I'd given to someone who needed it more than I did.

The felt she had was about 1/2 as thick as the original, but a couple
thicknesses work just fine!
