K1: Potential new product

Benny Aumala
This SGC page has links to 3 different reviews about ADSP2
-RadCom   11/03
-QST         01/04
-CQ         May/04
I agree that 80mA is much compared to K1`s own 55mA.
Elecraft KDSP2 takes 60mA (10mA in standby) and might not
go in K1. Maybe an external unit is better.
It can be left at home with power supply and current consumption.

Experience shows that input level should be from loudspeaker line.
Specs say 10mVrms min input for Lo unit, 100mVrms for Hi unit.

If a really low power DSP could be made for the K1 and/or KX1 - say, one
that consumes 10 to 15 mA from a nominal 6V supply, less from a higher
voltage - which features would you be seeking?

Selectable bandpass filters?  Auonotch?  Denoiser?

Which would you be wiling to give up?

No, there is no project like this in the works, but I tend to think
about DSP...

Thanks!

I have both of those rigs and like them a lot but don't really think either
are DSP-worthy, given how and where the rigs were designed to be used. The
bandwidth controls on them are perfectly matched to the rig's other
capabilities. Adding DSP to them would be sort of like buying 3rd party
leather seats for a Geo Metro.

The inclusion of the KX1 in this discussion is getting very close to
saying that a small DSP unit should be created as an external option.
There is just not room in the KX1 to add much of anything (unless the
internal battery space is sacrificed. But then Lyle has created magic
before, so he may be able to put one in if it has really tiny SMD
technology.

A small DSP board should easily be feasible inside the K1.

I don't have a metro, but leather seats are really nice. :-)

John makes a good point.  The K1 and KX1 already have much better
receivers than most QRP rigs.  With those rigs, the ability to make
contacts is limited much more by transmitter power than by receiving
capability.

On the other hand, DSP noise reduction sure does reduce operator fatigue
after hours of contest operation.  I think NR would be the most
important feature, with automatic notch and bandpass filters in the
"nice to have" category but not as important.

Autonotch is of limited value with CW and these are CW radios.

The "give up" is probably absolute minimum power consumption.

>From a practical point of view, giving up some degree of
flexibility - perhaps a limited number of bandpass filters
and a fixed (in set-up) center frequency - would probably
be acceptable.  With DSP it might also be reasonable to give
up some degree of performance (ultimate rejection) in the
crystal filters as they would be similar in function to the
roofing filter in the K3.
