K1 Questions - Recent Build

Bruce W1UJR
Hello group,

Its been a Elecraft month, first the KX1 and now I just finished up
the K1.
After three evenings of effort I was able to complete K1 serial
#02341 last night and go through the testing procedure.
All went quite well, but I have a few questions, perhaps some of your
other K1ers can help?

1) The front panel "offset" pot alters the RX frequency even when RIT
is off.
With the RIT off, turning the pot causes the displayed freq. changes,
and does the same thing with the RIT is engaged as well.
Is this normal, or do I have a problem here?

2) What are your thoughts on the battery option offered by Elecraft?

3) Is there a small bail or support that anyone has used to raise the
front of the RX up a bit?
Mine is now sitting on a roll of solder, but some type of flip down
bail would be ideal

4) Noise blanker, how well does it work? I built mine last night and
installed it, not quite as a severe as I expected.
I understand an LED can be used in place of one of the caps, can
someone speak to the difference this makes?

Thanks for your help!

Re: K1 Questions - Recent Build

Jozef Hand-Boniakowski
I completed my K1 about a month ago and have worked 124 QSOs in 25
countries and 18 states.  DX on 40 has been as easy as DX on 20.  I run
it on four 55-watt Siemens solar panels and six 200 amp-hr 6 volt deep
cycle batteries (now 12 years old).  The RIT on my K1 does nothing when
it is off.  It does not alter frequency nor does it change the freq
display.  I stayed away from the internal battery option as I am not
interested in opening and closing the box when I want to change
batteries.  I'm planing on a gel cell, flexible solar panel and charge
controller for use in the field this summer.  No comments on the bail.
I have the noise blanker, but am in the country in the rural hills of
Vermont so have not had the chance nor need of using it, yet.

That is abnormal.  When RIT is OFF, the RIT pot should cause NO change.

Front Panel board Q2 must be turned on by the OFFSET signal from FP-U1 to disable RIT.  I'd check the connections and traces from Q2 to R3, R4, and R5, and from Q2 to pin 40 of U1.  Also, Q2 can be damaged by static electricity, and if that has happened, RIT would not be disabled when it should be.

>2) What are your thoughts on the battery option offered by Elecraft?

I used the KBT1 for 18 months, but pulled it when I decided I didn't like internal chemical leakage sources in my K1 (there's no leakage barrier in the KBT1), plus I like the full-sized speaker of the K1 without KBT1 installed (the KBT1 forces use of a micro-speaker).  I use an external 10-AA cell battery pack with 2700 mA-Hr cells, which has the advantage of significantly higher voltage than the 8-AA cell KBT1.

I wish.  Someone tried to market something plastic about six years ago, but I don't think the product sayed on the market long.

>4) Noise blanker, how well does it work?

It seems to work OK on the type of noise generated by spark plugs and motor commutators.  For the type of power line noise I usually run across, it's of little effect.

The LED raises **even higher** the level that the noise pulse must reach for the KNB1 to respond to it.  It will not help at all, but actually make the KNB1 less effective, to go to this high noise threshold option when noise at low or modest levels is being experienced.  I'd say it would be very very unusual to have a situation in which the high threshold option would have anything but an adverse effect.

Bruce,

Your RIT situation is not normal.  There are 2 potential causes that I see
in the schematic.  First is that pin 40 of the microprocessor never goes
near 5 volts when RIT is turned off - check that first.  If you do find near
5 volts at pin 40, then the most likely problem is that Q2 has been zapped
and will not conduct (it should conduct from source to drain when RIT is
turned off).
