Hello Elecrafters!
I began the build of K2 s/n 6358 today. I have been QRT for the last 25+ years due to career and family. Now that both are at the stage where I have more free time, it seemed like the perfect time to get active again. Since I have been mostly a cw operator since first licensed in 1967, I began looking for a no compromise cw radio. After much googling for radio reviews, the K2 stood out due to the feature set and the passion of the owners. The K2 seemed like a can't miss (especially considering the price/ performance). My initial impression is that this isn't your father's Heathkit: They sure shrunk the parts! very FB. a lot of us took the K2 plunge to enjoy the building experience, and using a fine radio we built afterwards. focus on getting the correct parts in place and making good solder joints - and do the intermediate checkouts. when part ID is confusing ask for help. make sure your tools are up to the job. i enjoyed my stock/QRP K2 for many years on various modes. be glad yours has the mods built-in as my older K2 has a bunch of jumper wires. see where your journey takes you with yours. 73, curt K2 #2117 (SSB/160m/100w+KAT100 in progress) --- Tony Parker <[hidden email]> wrote: > Hello Elecrafters! > > I began the build of K2 s/n 6358 today. > > I have been QRT for the last 25+ years due to career > and family. It certainly is a no compromise CW rig. I have enjoyed mine and
continue to learn more and more about its capabilities as I continue to put it through its paces. Now if only my ability to copy CW would increase in a proportional rate to my learning about the K2, I would be in great shape. I picked up the K2 to get a great CW rig. The kit building was just a means to an end. But I ended up enjoying the kit building much more than I planned, and have ended up a more knowledgeable ham as a result of the experience and the wisdom shared by the folks on this list. Enjoy, we look forward to hearing you on the net. 73 - David Wilburn [hidden email] K4DGW K2 S/N 5982 On Wed, 2008-01-09 at 21:22 -0800, Tony Parker wrote: > Hello Elecrafters! > > I began the build of K2 s/n 6358 today. > > I have been QRT for the last 25+ years due to career and family. Hello Tony:
I am a little ahead of you, just getting ready to go through the second set of testing and tuning the receiver. I second what the others have said about using a visor with several interchangeable magnifying lenses. Also make sure that you match parts to their pictures and don't be hesitant of calling the guys and girls at Elecraft, when a part does not quite match. Turns out that certain parts have changed appearances by color or shape. But they are great and reply quite quickly. Finally someone there gave two other tips. 1) work on a raised platform, so that the parts are at eyelevel when using magnification or lower your chair to accomplish the same idea, saves on the back pain! and 2) Buy some bright portable Halogen bulb lamps to use for lighting the boards and parts, also saves on eyesight! Good luck on the build and I hope to QSO with you, when I get s/n 6301 on the air and learn code!! Bill, KE5KWE On the Road in the USA

I identified every part and component and put them into bins, plastic drawers with a pencil written note in the manual exactly where everything was. I identified a few parts by elimination at the inventory stage. By the time I heated up the soldering iron, everything was in place, indexed and ready when I needed them. I took a day or so to do the inventory and saw that some fibre washers were missing - for the speaker no problem, but they are used in the finals. Elecraft sent them to me before I needed them. I finished my first and only K2, and the 160m "option" in a few hours less than a week. It has been over two and a half years since I built my K2 and I made the point of doing a thorough inventory in mid 2005 on this list. If I had tried to fly by the seat of my pants, picking through an unsorted bag of bits, it would have taken me at least three times longer.
