K2 #6951 "It's Alive!"

John Fritze
After several years of sitting in the cabinets of my shack, I decided to
put my wife's K2 together.  She decided that she is too busy with work,
studying for a masters in computer programming, and social obligations in
general that there just isn't enough time.  I think it is because at "xx"
years old it's hard for her to see the parts.  So, number 6951 is now
completed.  Although it is a 15W version, it does have the SSB, DSB, NB,
ATU, internal battery and IO board options.

It took about 2 1/2 weeks of off and on evenings and weekends to complete.
It all works great which is a testament to the folks who wrote the
manuals.  Only one missing part (out of thousands): a RF choke for the I/O
board which even during Dayton, I received a confirmation from Elecraft
service will be shipped on Monday.  First test contact: Venezuela 10W to a
vertical on 20M SSB.

So we are now a 2 K2 family or is that K2-squared?  Oh, and a K3, P3,
KPA500, KAT500, KX3, KXPA100.............got to love that purple Kool Aide.

I took about 10 years to finish mine. I started it, put it aside and then saw lots of mods and so forth, so I noted them and fit them into the instructions. When I finally got back to it, I didn't have to unsolder anything to fit the mods in. I did have to toss a firmware chip that had never been installed in favor of a newer one that I ordered also.
It all worked when done! All the options installed but the 2M and the 100 watts.

Chuck  -  It's good to know that the K2 can take anyway between one week and ten years to build.  I am sure it was worth waiting for and you will get lots of enjoyment with it. Of all the Elecraft kits I have built the K2 gave me the greatest pleasure and satisfaction.  Incidentally, there is not a 2m option for the K2 unless you mean the 5Mhz/Xverter interface.

Chuck,

WHAT!  K2 SN 6951 was kitted much less than 10 years ago, and had
already been updated with ALL the Elecraft mods.

Also, what 2 meter option for the K2?  The K2 does not have a 2 meter
option.  If you want 2 meters, one must use the XV144 transceiver.

I hope you did not replicate mods that were already installed on the board!

OTOH, if you were updating a much earlier kit (original serial number
less than 3000) and you purchased the upgrade kit with new boards, then
all may be OK (those upgrades were issued a new serial number) - all you
needed to do is build the K2 using the newer manual.

Re: K2 #6951 "It's Alive!"

Hi Don,
My kit is #1089 March 2000, but I was responding to a post by kit owner #6951.
Sorry I said 2M when I meant xverter interface.
I bought these changes and mods in July 2003, but hadn't really gotten much built by then...
BFOMDKT
VFO ALC/10M mod parts kit
K2 Temperature Compensated PLL Reference Upgrd
K2 MCU and IOC firmware upgrade
K2 Rev A to B upgr parts
2nd Filter Upgrade for the K2
then in October 2009, I bought these mods and upgrades getting ready to build the rest of the kit...
K2 MCU and IOC firmware upgrade 2.04
KSB2 B/W Upgrade Cap Kit
Matched Filter Crstals (14)
then in later October I bought these options...still planning to re-start building...
KAT2
K102
Built the K2 by 2011 incorporating all the changes and mods without removing and resoldering anything...
then I bought KAF2 and KBT2
The K2 works perfectly...
Thanks for the reply and your excellent help on the forums...
