I've gotten K2 # 5422 - out of the crates, out of the
hanger, onto the tarmack, and pushed out a ways, to Part III alignment. Thanks to superb help from "Scott", "Gary", "Lisa", "Don" and Elecraft Parts and Support groups - I've had a successful build so far! Can't say enough about both the experts on this "board", and with Elecraft's support team. VERY NICE to work with. Its a good feeling, knowing there is help a hollar away! QUESTION: K2 BANDS? How does one know what "BAND" the K2 is set for? I know I can do BAND+ and BAND-, and I can do BAND+/BAND- frequencies entries. BUT HOW DO I (me) know - what BAND the K2 thinks it is in? There must be a base BAND spot - where all the ups, downs, and changes go from. When I did the VCO RF BOARD alignments - at one point, I had the K2's bands all messed up. I think I was able to get it back - but I'm still not sure I understand the philosophy the K2 uses - for being in 1 band or another. Once I do get the K2 in a known BAND, how do I change frequencies IN THAT BAND? One almost wonders why there isn't a "Band Swith", with markings 80/40/......... :) I think those little black relay boxes, have a hand in this madness. If you think you might have cranked the tuning knob so many time you have actually "tuned" to the wrong band, just do a direct frequency entry and it'll automatically switch to the appropriate band for the frequency you entered. The only "tricky" part about direct frequency entry is that if you install the 160 meter module you have to enter a zero first for frequencies in the 160 meter band so the K2 won't think you want 18 MHz instead of 1800 KHz Tuning within a band is done by turning the big knob or using the direct frequency entry, or am I not understanding the last question? Fred,
Relays K12-15 switch the 8 VCO ranges. Once you have selected a range the LCD is your indicator of what band you are on. Because they are latching relays it will "remember" what band you are on. Having selected a band changing frequencies is a matter of turning the optical encoder (big knob below the LCD) to move up/down. Or use direct frequency entry from the keypad. > How does one know what "BAND" the K2 is set for? Hi Fred, The K2 firmware does have a notion of what band you're on. The way *you* can tell (usually) is to look at the VFO frequency. However, it is possible to tune outside the normal band limits, possibly even into the next band's territory. If you do that, you'll notice that the receiver sensitivity will get a lot worse. But in any case, the way to get back to the correct band is to do "direct frequency entry," described in the manual. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Fred,
Look in the manual and on page 5, top of the second column, you will see the K2 'Frequency Ranges' listed. We commonly refer to those as 'bands' 3.5 to 4 MHz is the 80 meter band, 7 to 7.3 is the 40 meter band, ... 28.0 to 28.8 is the K2 10 meter band (the actual amateur allocation goes up to 29.7 MHz). The BAND+ and BAND- buttons are the same as the old-fashioned bandswitch - think of it as stepping from one band to another, just like the rotary switch would move one band for each detent position, the BAND+ and BAND- buttons move one band up or down each time it is tapped. The K2 shows the frequency on the LCD display, and you can move within a band with the VFO knob (note that the frequency changes when rotating the knob) When you tap the BAND+ or BAND- the frequency display will indicate the band that the K2 is tuned too - unless you have moved the VFO knob in an attempt to move from one band to another - and that will mess up the band selection - you can do a Direct Frequency Entry to get it back on the correct band. The K2 will tune a bit outside the amateur bands, but if you try to go too far, the K2 will not actually tune because of the width of the bandpass filters and the limits of the VFO tuning range - the displayed frequency WILL continue to change well outside the bands, but the K2 will not actually be changing frequency. 73, Don W3FPR > -----Original Message----- > QUESTION: K2 BANDS? > > How does one know what "BAND" the K2 is set for? > I know I can do BAND+ and BAND-, and I can do > BAND+/BAND- frequencies entries. Welcome to the Elecraft club, membership lasts a long time! The K2 returns to the last used frequency when you power it up, other than that the bands just cycle round. Assuming you haven't set any transverter bands pressing down from 1.8 MHz takes you to the 28 MHz band, etc. Moving around the band is just a matter of rotating the tuning knob or pressing the "rate" switch then the knob. The K2 remembers the last used frequency, mode and KAT2 settings for each band. If there was a rotary band switch, it would create problems with transverter bands which are hidden unless you set them in the menu. I have a TS570, FT857, K1 and K2. I don't find navigating my way around the K2 at all difficult. 73 Dave, G4AON _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
