K2 CW TEST mode

Matt Osborn
I need to practice CW (sending as well as receiving) so I can upgrade
my license.

Is it harmful to practice CW using my K2 in CW TEST mode?  I would
like to get use to the keyer and my paddles and not have to buy
practice oscillator and keyer.

Ron's right, but if you plan to do this a lot, I think I'd attach a
dummy load to the radio and turn down the power. That way, the finals
will be protected in case you forget to switch to TEST mode some time.

This is especially good advice since the radio doesn't remember that it
was in test mode when it is turned off.

Thanks everyone.  Dummy load is attached and practice has commenced.

I'm really surprised at how quickly I can duplicate the sounds of each
letter using the paddle and keyer.  It must be much more difficult to
get the timing correct with a straight key.

I'm brand new at Morse (and ham radio, too) and have only a no-code
tech license.

Your post caused a new thought to cross my dusty mind;  as a no-code
tech, I have full privileges above 50mhz, does that mean I can
practice CW on the air as long as I'm 50mhz or higher?

Absolutely! You need to pass a morse code test to operate HF. You don't
need to pass a morse code test to operate morse code.

I'm using K7Q0 (Chuck Adams) mp3 disk.  I also have G4FON's Koch
method trainer, but K7QO's is much more portable.

Re: K2 CW TEST mode, and KX1 CW test

In reply to this post by John Lonigro
For the KX1 just tune outside the ham bands by a few KHz. The unit won't
transmit but the sidetone oscillator still operates. Seems to work great for
a little CW practice. (Some of us need a LOT of CW practice.)

If think the transmitter is also disabled when you edit the CW speed (so that the current WPM value is displayed).

No, no harm in keying the K2 in "CW test" mode -- that's what it's there for.

Great feature on both rigs, by the way.

17/15 Meter no output

Steven Pituch
Hi all,

I noticed that after doing the mods to upgrade K2 #402, I don't get any
output on 17 and 15 meters.

I did change C30 and C36 to 470 uF, ,and C33 to 2.2 uF, which is part of
the 17/15 meter band pass filter mod change.

However, receive seems fine.  I just get zero Watts out in transmit.

Since I think the low pass and bandpass filters are shared in receive
and transmit, I don't think its the filters.  I wonder if a relay went bad.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Steve, W2MY

RE: 17/15 Meter no output

Don Wilhelm-3
Stephen,

An important thing to remember here is 'IT WORKED BEFORE' - and you
certainly did not change any relays as part of the upgrade.

If you had adequate power out before making the changes to the 17/15 meter
bandpass, look there firstly and mostly.  You did not touch the Low Pass
Filters by doing the upgrade, so it should still be just fine.

Possibilities -- C33 was damaged when it was installed - if you just pushed
it into the holes (spaced wider than the capacitor leads), you could have
broken one of the leads inside the cap, and it will not show physically.
Check and recheck for any solder bridges.  Do you find a nice peak on
receive for each inductor on 15 meters (and each capacitor on 17) - if you
find good peaks, the inductors and C30 and C36 are likely OK, but C33 is
still suspect (replace it temporarily with a close value to check).

Use a 'scope or RF Probe to measure the RF Voltages as indicated in the
Transmitter Signal Tracing section of the Troubleshooting Appendix in the
manual.  Find out in which stage or section the RF signal gets lost and look
in that area only.  Comparing the RF levels with those on a working band is
a quick and easy way to determine what the proper level should be (there may
be some varition due to internal gain differences from band to band).

Again, I repeat, do not monkey with stuff until you find out where the
signal is getting lost and look most carefully at the areas you just
changed - remember that it did work before.

73,
Don W3FPR

I'm in the habit of switching my K2 to TEST mode whenever it's turned on but
I'm not operating.

That avoids becoming a dreaded 'ditter' if something bumps the key. Because
I use 'phones 99% of the time, the sidetone can't protect me if I don't have
them on my head.

Same here -- my four year old son loves to diddle with the radio, and "tests mode" keeps it legal.

I got a laugh the other day when he actually said, as I sat down at my desk ready to operate, "hey Daddy, the K2 is not in test mode."  Sure enough...

These four year olds know way more than we assume.
