K2 CW test mode

David Giles
Hello All,

Unlike most of the people on this mailing list, my CW sending skill is very
poor.  So I have bought a paddle and am practicing regularly.  One thing I
have found with my K2 (S/N 5492) is that the CW test mode will sound a
continuous note with both paddles pressed.  This happens intermittently and
in mode A or B.  I have been using speeds around 15 to 20 wpm.

The answer is to set the power down to minimum and use a dummy load - which I
have been doing and the problem hasn't happened.  I suspect its a firmware
issue since the display is being a bit more active than usual flashing the
'c' character, than when normally transmitting.

More an observation than a problem that must be fixed.

David:

What you are experiencing is the automatic hand key software selection.  You
can turn it off in the menu settings.  When both paddles are closed at the
same time the K2 thinks it is running in the straight key mode.  Enter the
Menu but tapping the menu button and then rotate the vfo know uutil you see
"INP" - Press and hold the menu button to enter the menu and then tap the
"Display" button. The display button will toggle the autodet mode on or off
each time you tap the display button.  Make sure you toggle it to off  and
then tap the menu button twice to get back to the frequency display.  The K2
will no longer produce a solid note when both key sides are closed at the
same time.

Check to see if you might have AUTO DETECT enabled:

Auto Detect can be turned off if desired. Find the INP menu
entry, the parameter, then tap DISPLAY to select ADET OFF.

With A DET enabled, if you happen to manage to close BOTH the DIT and
DAH paddles at precisely the same time, the K2 'thinks' it has an
external (non-paddle) keying device attached (as shown in the Fig 8-1
illustration in the most recent K2 manual (page 95) and will generate
to continuous output carrier (and sidetone) until the paddles are released.

Cheers,

As others have replied, this is normal with the auto-detect circuit.
The flashing "c" is an indication that you are in test mode.  It's
handy in case you might wonder why nobody answers your calls :^)
