K2 Modification Help

Dave Agsten

G'day to all,

I have a couple of K2s that I would like to exchange options in and am wondering just how involved it would be. I did not build either of these radios initially.

Here are the two radios:

K2/10 S/N 02689 with KSB2, K160RX, K60XV, KNB2, KAF2, KAT2

k2/100 S/N 3523 with KSB2 ( I have KNB2, K160RX and KAF2 kits to install )

What I would like to do is pull the KPA100 out of the one radio and make what is currently the QRP radio a K2/100. I'd like to know if there is anything to be aware of or reasons that this might be a bad idea. How difficult of as project would this be?

Tnx es 73,
Dave N8AG

Dave,

There should be no problem. Just change the tops of the two radios. But
.... why? The two are or would be so similar once the additional kits are
installed.

Dave,

You will have to mount the headers (2 pin) for the AUX RF and the AUX
12V on the RF Board unless you have already done that (none of your
current options require those).
Your current QRP K2 has a serial number less than 3000 -- You will also
have to make the mods on the Control Board for the sidetone source/TXD
from U6 pin 25 - again, this might have been done  The instructions are
in the KPA100 manual.
Oh yes, you will also have to remove pin 4 from the Control Board header
that the KPA100 ribbon cable plugs into.

Other than that, you should not have to do anything other than the
mechanical swap.

I'd keep the K2/10 with the KAT2. That's a nice tuner and can't be used with
the PA. The only other option in the qrp rig you don't have for the qro is
the K60RX. Might be better to move that than to waste the KAT2.

Check the Elecraft web page for upgrades that either rig might be lacking  in
support of the KPA. Also make sure your Firmwares are up-to-date. I would
recommend doing a reset on the older rig after install hardware and prior to
configuring setup. You may want to check your filter configs and record any
configs that will get wiped in a reset. Of course all power settings thru the
KAT will need to be cal'd too.
