K2 Phone Jack

Jim K4ZMV
My K2's phone jack has failed for the third time.  I've ordered two new jacks, but I am thinking about wiring the internal speaker always on and muting it at the external speaker jack.  I'm a little concerned about just opening the internal speaker line without a load for the audio amp.  I could just insert a 15 ohm 2 watt resister as the load.  Any observations on that approach.  Thanks.

Jim;
I had the same problem with my K1 (same part nr). I
just wired the speaker and in parallel with the phone
jack. Speaker is on all the time, When headphones are
in use the volume control gets turned down. This has
worked well for me. I did this about 2 years ago.

When I replaced my headphone jack I took the opportunity to wire in a
speaker/headphone switch to the back panel. I leave the headphones
plugged in most all of the time now and just use the switch to select
between headphones and speaker. That means a lot less wear on the
jack. It is a lot more convenient than plugging and unplugging the
headphones all the time anyway.

Is there an upgradeable fix for this problem?  I'm on my 2nd jack and it's going south.

Thanks for the comments.  I solved the dilemma by replacing the phone jack, but hard
wired the switch closed on the PC board.  There is audio in the speaker and the
headphones regardless of the phone jack status.  I built up a small audio amp which I
connect to the external speaker jack.  If I don't want speaker audio, I turn off the amp.
By the way, the amp feeds two speakers on either side of the radio desk which sorta
gives me stereo.  I notice the K3 has a 1/4" phone jack.  And, I have a K3 on order to
deliver sometime late June or early July.

K3 #513 complete

Manuel Maseda

After about 5 hour of assembly K3 #513 came to life tonight.  Except for
being short a few screws everything went together per the manuals.
Hopefully I'll have some time tomorrow evening to calibrate and put on the
air.

K3 - modification - some ideas

Alexandr Kobranov
Hello list,

as I am waiting for my K3/10 I am thinking about some personal
modifications.
Maybe somebody else has some more detailed ideas and can add some
comments.

What I am thinking about:
as there will be a space inside K3 (not having 100W and ATU unit),
what about to
- putting small power supply inside (13V/10A)
- putting small 28/144MHz 5W transvertor iside

all can be non-destructive using replacemnet for blind panel on the
place for fans on rear panel, TX/RX cables for transverter can be some
BNC jumpers from transverter panel, all other connectors also fitted
in "new" rear panel
removeing "new" panel and putting back of original one can return K3
to original state if later needed

Just ideas....

73!

Re: K3 - modification - some ideas

k0wa@swbell.net

Alexandr....

One of the things that surprised me when I built my K3 is how small it really is.  I would think you could do some of the modifications with the 10 watt version if you had the power amp shield installed.  The physical room is rather small in the radio once you have it built.  So, how small can you get the power supply or how small can you get the transverter?

The second thing I can think about is how does the proposed modification affect the performance of the K3?  I have no answer, but would have to be trial and error.

The K3 is not like the K2 where modification was ... well ... encouraged.  The K3's design might not lend itself to modifications

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply.  If you don't have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it.  If you can't find any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common Sense.  Is Common Sense divine?

Last night, I completed 80% of the K3 assembly in about 3-1/2 hours.
Although this is not really a "mod," I did replace the two SO-239 coaxial
panel receptacles with Amphenol Teflon types.  I am a big proponent of
Amphenol connectors and had a few on-hand.

I will post a link today with a photo showing the change, and also include
the Mouser P/N for anyone wishing to substitute the stock SO-239 with the
higher quality Amphenol type.  At only $8 for a pair, it really dresses up
the rear panel.   It's a direct replacement and the mounting holes line-up
just fine.
