K2 Power Supply

Matt Osborn
Hi folks,

My K2, #4973 (until this afternoon, I thought it was #4978) is coming
along fine.  I had the weekend off, so I assembled the control board
yesterday, the front panel today and I've had a good start on the RF
board.

What I need is a good quality power supply.  I'm a new ham, so I don't
have a parts box worthy of the name.  I'll need something to power the
K2 and recharge its internal battery.

Is there a consensus on power supplies?  You know, the power supply
every one would buy if they had to start from scratch?  Failing that,
is there a power supply I definitely don't want to buy?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Matt,

I use an Astron power supply.  It works great.  It's what would be
considered a "standard" power supply.  The one time it had problems, I
was able to fix it myself.

You can find good switching power supplies out there; but make sure you
find a good one.  A bad switching power supply with throw out a lot of RFI.

Matt,

Not a direct answer to your question, but take a look at my website
www.qsl.net or mirror at http://earthlink.net/~w3fpr article on using a
Smartcharger with the internal battery.  It will keep your battery safely
charged and will power the QRP K2 just fine.
A separate power supply is not necessary with this arrangement, and your
battery life will be improved.  My internal battery finally failed after 5
years of good service, and I believe it failed at that point only because I
left it on the shelf without use or float-charging for over 3 months.
