K2 SSB PTT Switch

Bryan Savill
Can anyone recommend an appropriate PTT switch for my Heil Proset and K2?

Re: K2 SSB PTT Switch

Hi Bryan,

               Well yes, here:

http://www.mcmaster.com/#pedal-switches/=pt2v00

I like the type E under foot switches.  Industrial quality and
in many cases better that the far more expensive "ham" foot switches.  I have
one on the K2 and on the K3 have 2 from a "Y" adapter.  One on the floor and a
second on the desk.   I plug in a Kenwood MC60 from the front and extended the
MIC & headphone jacks from the back to use headsets.  With the K3 all options
are available without getting behind it. I use PTT more than VOX

If you get one with the cord you will have to put a connector
on.   I prefer getting a cable from like Sweetwater cutting off one end and
using the Quick Disconnect version of the switch.. Flexible for later.  I reused
a switch that for years was with my TS-930.

Hi Bryan.

The best footswitches I have found have been either electric sewing machine
or Dictaphone (audio transcription) foot controllers, picked up for
$next-to-nothing in junk shops (or ask a sewing machine repair shop for a
cast-off).  They are solidly built, the size of a paperback book, and heavy,
with long-life well made switch contacts.  They completely outclass the
crappy little lightweight ones sold new into the ham market.

They work equally well with other, lesser, radios and headsets, and not just
on SSB either   :-)

Tip: fit a 1/4" mono plus AND a phono plug on the cable, in parallel, to be
able to use the switch with radios or amps that have either type of socket.

The footswitches that I have had the best use from.. are the heavy metal ones used in Communications Centers, with the only failures being the cable from the metal footswitch to the equipment. I've seen this dropped, and of course kicked to no end... but never had a failure.. other than the connecting wire. Great foot switch!

Have a great day,

I've got a "real" one now, but there was something to be said for a J-38
on a board with the spring screwed way down ... as long as you wore
shoes.  PTT on some transmitters of the day was good for a moderate
"toe-jolt" if you didn't. :-)

Any music shop selling guitars will have a wide variety of foot switches.
Prices start at around $15.00 and the two I have are old now and still
working.
