K2 Sidetone Problem

gearjam
I have upgraded my firmware to the latest revision. (and replaced the I/O controller). The sidetone is gone. There is no option to change the source, it stays on U8-4 when I tap the display button.
When I put the old IC back, the sidetone returns. My K2 is an older (1644) rig and I don't have the 100 watt option or the the KIO2 option installed. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Larry

K3 Frequency Memory suggestion

drewko
I'd like to suggest that the two non-numeral keys on the keypad (i.e..
SPOT and AFX) be used for access to general-purpose memory with M->V
and V->M. I guess these keys would then refer to memory locations 10
and 11, joining  0 through 9 of the other keys.

I don't really pay attention to the numerical key labels for memory
access, just the key positions on the keypad. So the two extra memory
buttons would be quite useful even without numerical labels. Why not
put them to use for memory access.

Hey guys,
I just went ahead and did the U8-4 mod and of course the sidetone was there. Maybe the firmware was changed so you didn't have a choice. Everything else seems to work OK.

Thanks and 73,

Larry, NU4B

Larry,

Version 2.04p firmware does have the sidetone source toggle, so it
should work.  Are you really tapping the DISPLAY button or are you
really pressing it (a HOLD operation).

If all else fails, go to the KIO2 or KPA100 manual (download them from
the Electrtft website), and make the Control Board wiring change - it
consists of one cut and two added wires (plus a .001 uF capacitor) - not
really a lot ot it.  The U8-4 sidetone source is more reliable than the
U6-25 and several of us who deal with K2 support and repair situations
have been lobbying Wayne to eliminate the selection and glue it to the
U8-4 source, which would require that owners of K2s below SN 3000 would
have to make the wiring change if new firmware is installed.

Folks,

OK, I looked at the firmware chip that I received just today, and it is
level 2.04R instead of 2.04P.
I do not have confirmation, but from Larry's report, it may be that the
sidetone source is now fixed at U8-4.  If so, it will solve a lot of
problems that users have, even though it may prove to be a minor
inconvenience for those who still have older K2s without the sidetone
source change.

I am going out on a limb here without confirming information, so be
gentle if I am later proven incorrect.

That is exactly the difference, and the only difference, between 2.04P
and 2.04R.

Lyle,

Thank you (and Gary, Scott and others thank you and Wayne for that change).
Now the documentation for the firmware needs to catch up - it is not
mentioned in the sheet that is shipped with the firmware.

I am copying Ron on this so he has a 'heads up'.

Re: K2 Sidetone Problem

I just received the firmware today (Sat) and I checked and it was 2.04R. And your right the documentation was not up to date yet. At some point I would have had to do the mod anyway. (My first thought was something was wrong. Panic first, ask questions later. Hi) Thanks again for all the info.

Hi Larry,

I had the same problem and it was because of a not working I/O controller.Elecraft sent me a new one and the problem was gone.
