K2 assembly

VK7JB

Hello All,

seems there's a burst of K2 assembling going on in the world.  I've just started
#6998 and all is going well so far.  Hoping I won't need too much help, but it's
good to know the group is here.  I've found a review of old K2 postings very
helpful, along with Don's tips about calibration etc.

It's going to be a big project.  I've also got the KPA100 and the DSP module to
built and fit.  Hope it will be fun.

Cheers from down here,

John

  John,

WOW, only 2 away from the 7000 mark!

If you are looking at the really old K2 postings, there are many that
have been made "null and void" by the updated boards.  Remember that you
have the updated boards in your kit, and you should not have to do any
cuts or adds when you add the options.  I have 'repaired' several new
K2s where the builder "tried" to add the cuts and wire adds to the K2
control board when installing either the KIO2 or the KPA100.  If those
builders had read the instructions correctly, it would have been
apparent that those changes were only to be done for K2s with serial
numbers below 3000.

In other words, read and understand, and if you have questions about the
understanding part, ask here on the reflector.

Enjoy the build, and when finished, enjoy the K2.

Additional note (not on my webpage yet) -- when setting the filters on
recent K2s, you will find that the wide (SSB) filters are actually much
wider than the "width" indicated by the K2 display - and as a result,
the suggested settings for the SSB filters listed in the manual will not
work well.  The cure is to use Spectrogram (or a similar tool) to
measure the actual bandwidth.  Refer to my webpage article on K2 Dial
Calibration for more information.

Good morning John, I finished off my K2 just last year and it was a blast to put together. There was times of confusion and victory. This reflector was called on many times to help me get back on track. I also found some very good sites out there that have assembly pictures. At times the pictures were worth a thousand words. Go to the Elecraft site, go to builders resources you will see a link step by step K2 assembly pictures. This site helped me out lots when the manual was just not making sense.
Good luck with the build
