K2 external auto tuner and 100 watt amp

paulb
Hello folks

Need a bit of input here....I have a K2 with auto tuner fitted.

I would like to add the 100watt amp and external tuner.
Can these be put together in one single unit, using an Elecraft
box ?

Not sure how the amplifier is linked to the K2, normally it has
a harness internally.

The plan is to keep the K2 stock 10 watt for portable, and
plug in the external amp and tuner for use at home or contests.

thanks

cheers

Paul -

Yes, the K2 and the 100-watt amplifier / KAT100 tuner can be used in the
way you describe.  Order the version of the KAT-100 that is intended to
be used this way.  The correct model number is KAT100-2.  You will need
the following items as well:  (1), an EC-2 enclosure  (2) a tilt-bail
ETS2 (so you can tilt the amp/tuner up at the same angle as the K2) -
although I preferred less tilt and ordered 2 each ETS15 tilt stands, one
for the amp, one to replace the one on the K2.   You will want to make
up a cable for use between the K2 and the amplifier, a cable with 3
"ends".  One end plugs into the K2, one into the amplifier, and one
hangs loose as the connecting point for external accessories such as a
computer for digital modes.

There are several ways to complete the assembly.  I chose to  leave the
basic K2 pretty much alone,  so it could be operated as a 10-watt
portable rig.  I did not install the speaker or shield that came with
the amp, preferring to leave the speaker in the K2.  This also meant
that I didn't need to install speaker wiring inside the amplifier/tuner,
and saved one interconnecting cable.  You may want to do things
differently.  When assembling the amp and tuner in the EC2, the tuner
bottom plate becomes the bottom cover of the enclosure, and the
amplifier heatsink becomes the top cover.

In my setup, the K2, KSB2, K60RX, KNB2, KDSP2, KBT2, KAT2, and KIO2, and
speaker reside in the basic K2 box, and the KAT100-2 and the KPA100
(without the speaker) fit in the other box (the EC-2 enclosure).

If you have any questions during the assembly, somebody on this
reflector can help you.  If not myself, then one of the other people
that hang out here will be available.

Re: K2 external auto tuner and 100 watt amp

Hi Jim

Thanks for the info :-)

Excellent, that is exactly what I want to put together.

for the record, some background to this project...
a few weekends ago was the ZL National Field Day which
I havn't done anything remotely serious for over 20 years !
A small team was put together, and I took along my K3 and
the K2 as a backup receiver.
Long story short, the K2 was put into service when it was
quickly apparent the other-brand transceivers had front end
and/or mixer overload. ( eg in kiwi speak - completely hammered )
K3 ran perfectly, no question. The K2 performed
beyond the call of duty, so figure add the amp and tuner for
casual contest and home station work. ( build  6534 )

thanks again Jim

cheers for now

Paul,

The KAT100 is designed to be installed in the EC2 enclosure.  It has the
plugs to connect to the KPA100 internal cables (except for the
speaker).  The external cabling is also provided with the KPA100 and
KAT100 kits, just make up the cable shown in the KAT100 manual.
Your base K2 will need the KIO2 to provide the path for the required
signals.  There are alternatives to the KIO2 that can be homebrewed, but
they do not provide a connection for the computer.  The computer
connection capability in the KPA100 is not used if it is mounted
external to the base K2.

Paul,
A picture is always helpful, so I posted some photos up on my site
so you can see what the combination looks like.

Hope it helps!
