I wasn't much interested in paying $100 for a replacement K2 knob nor could I find a source for the Yaesu FT-100 tuning knob.....so, I found on eBay a new knob for the Yaesu FT-450 which fit perfectly on the K2 and cost $10. However, the FT-450 tuning knob was a bit small so back to eBay (gota love it!) and I found listed the rubber band for the ICOM 718 for $6.
Well, after much grunding and pushing I got the 718 rubber band over the FT-450 knob. I really like the feel of this setup over the original K2 and the finger hole is "real" not some fake stick-on. I think it looks better than the orignal K2 as well. I don't have a personal webpage these days to post a jpeg of this setup, but if you wanna see what this setup looks like on my K2, send me an email at [hidden email] and I will send you a photo. 73 ed ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

If you park on your favorite frequency and yak, it may not be something
you value. But if you are a ham that TUNES the bands, the 73CNC knob transforms the feel of the K2. It seems a bit much for a knob, but to bring back some of the feel of the classic receivers I've used in the past, it was worth it. Well for the K3 either. I thought the price for the pair was totally nuts!
That was up until I got to use one. Ordered a few days later with no regrets since either. Had the original all black ones. When the variety with the insert became available I replaced the all black with them. That was a pure eye candy decision. It it just reminded me of the Collins I wanted and the Heath SB's I had. . The K2 has a knob from an old Ampex tape machine Would I want a heavy knob to carry to a SOTA site, no. But I don't do that so maybe. Well, most likely I would/will, just a matter of time and when I have cash burning a hole in my pocket. Kind of like food, you have to try it to know... 73, Bob K2TK ex KN2TKR (1956) & K2TKR On 4/17/2014 1:42 PM, Phil Kane wrote: > On 4/17/2014 9:50 AM, Eddy wrote: > >> I wasn't much interested in paying $100 for a replacement K2 knob > I bit the bullet and bought the $100 knob and never regretted it. > > To each his own.. peace, brother! > -- -- > 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane > Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 > > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

These folks make a great weighted knob for the K2. You can often pick it up at hamfest where they are in the flea market. They generally offer a show special for less. My guess is they will be at Dayton since trhey are located in Ohio. I've been a happy user. 73, Dick, K2ZR/4 -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Bob Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2014 2:53 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K2 knob replacement Well for the K3 either. For those owners of newer K2s, be aware that the NEW K2 encoder (those
with a board soldered to the back of the encoder) has a larger shaft diameter than the older K2 encoders. I mention this as a way of warning newer K2 owners that the normal "K2" knob may not fit your K2. The new encoder shaft diameter is the same as the K3 encoders, but the K3 VFO A knob is too large for the K2 and the K3 VFO B knob may be too small in diameter. Know what you have in your K2 before ordering a replacement knob. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/17/2014 4:53 PM, Dick, K2ZR wrote: > Review the link: http://www.73cnc.com/product_p/k2blkmain.htm > These folks make a great weighted knob for the K2. Don, do you know about what the serial number was when the encoder
changed? Thanks. I do not know the serial number, but it was above 7000 for certain.
If you built your K2, you should know because you would have had to assemble the encoder board. If you did not build it, take the top cover off and peer between the front panel and the control board (maybe shine a light there to be able to see). If you see the back end of the encoder with a board mounted on it, you have the new one. The old one did not have a board mounted on it. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/17/2014 5:28 PM, Hisashi T Fujinaka wrote: > Don, do you know about what the serial number was when the encoder > changed? > > Thanks. > > On Thu, 17 Apr 2014, Don Wilhelm wrote: > >> For those owners of newer K2s, be aware that the NEW K2 encoder >> (those with a board soldered to the back of the encoder) has a larger >> shaft diameter than the older K2 encoders. >> >> I mention this as a way of warning newer K2 owners that the normal >> "K2" knob may not fit your K2. >> The new encoder shaft diameter is the same as the K3 encoders, but >> the K3 VFO A knob is too large for the K2 and the K3 VFO B knob may >> be too small in diameter. >> >> Know what you have in your K2 before ordering a replacement knob. >> >> 73, >> Don W3FPR >> >> On 4/17/2014 4:53 PM, Dick, K2ZR wrote: >>> Review the link: http://www.73cnc.com/product_p/k2blkmain.htm >>> These folks make a great weighted knob for the K2. I built my K2, but it's number 4355 so I don't remember much about small
details like that. :) Thanks. I've purchased knobs for my K2, K3, and KX3 from _www.73cnc.com_
(http://www.73cnc.com) . They even modified a K2 knob to fit my K3 VFO B shaft. Much better than the smaller VFO B knob! And all my knobs have the ball bearing spinner dimples. No connection with the company, just a happy camper. Mike AC6JA In a message dated 4/17/2014 2:07:35 P.M.
