Hi all,
Made my first contact with my K2 this eve, N6OND, Skip out in San Francisco (CA). I have a random wire up in the apt and used my old MFJ tuner with it. I "blew smoke" at 10 watts and the bottom of the rig was noticeably warm at the end of the QSO, so I was really smokin'.... He gave me a 549 and towards the end the QSB got me and ended it. The QRN was really bad on my end, so it was good he was using 150W with a 3el beam! (Ordered the NB module and T1 antenna tuner today, the NB should knock some of this noise out). Oh well, now it's just another ol used radio, hi hi... ButI can tell I've been inactive for 10 years. I had to back off the keyer to 13 wpm just to send without mistakes every other word. My code copy is getting back up fairly good just listening around the bands, I'm up to about 25wpm solid and closing back in on 30wpm plain language and contest exchanges, but my sending is just terrible. Really needs loads of practice. So I'll be working on it with the Vox on TESt for a while ;). One quick question. On a couple of occasions the keyer and power displays have popped up momentarily on their own as if I'd turned the pots, but I didn't touch them at the time. I was wondering if perhaps the pots just need to be worked and are a little 'scratchy'? Just thought it was strange. Anyone seen this before? Seems to be very rare so I'm not worried right now about bad connections or anything like that. Tnx es 73, LS W5QD |
BTW, my QSO with Skip was on 30M.

LS,
Don't worry about the flash of power or speed. Many K2s do that occasionally. It has to do with the firmware loading down with many things to do at once. It does not indicate any problem with the pots. 73, Don W3FPR lstavenhagen wrote: > One quick question. Ok, tnx gentlemen for the info.
Well then I'm completely out of things to troubleshoot or find wrong. It's 100% as far as I can tell so I guess it's all buttoned up and time to just go QRV. I did order the NB module yesterday, tho, as the rig is basically unusable at night now due to the line noise. I believe that's the last thing I really need to add to the rig. I really want to try portable now so may end up with a buddipole or buddistick to try that next (a T1 tuner is also on the way along with the NB module). And off to practice my sending as well.... Congrats once again on the K2 and the QSO. I don't have the noise blanker and unless I go mobile don't expect to have any need for it but it seems I have heard that it is not effective on anything other than ignition noise. I hope you don't find that to be the case. Possibly the DSP unit would serve you better for help in conquering the noise issue although back when I owned a K3 I did not find the DSP in that radio to be nearly as effective as I had hoped. I confess to being extremely fortunate where I live as noise is seldom a problem and I find the K2 to have a very nice quiet receiver. When I had to deal with considerable noise, some time back, I discovered that using a magnetic loop type of antenna for receive was a very effective way to reduce noise that I could not otherwise eliminate. So far I really like my K2, qrp version for cw 72 Garry/Ve7ajj |

I've had my K2 for a few years now and it does the same thing as yours. The
power or key speed will pop up once in a while and then vanish. It doesn't seem to hurt anything so, I've just ignored it.
