[K2] no speaker audio (perhaps bad headphone jack?)

John Shadle
Hi all,
I read through the archives and am wondering if I may have fallen prey
to the "bad headphone jack" problem. I am able to hear just fine when
I have my headphones plugged in, but get no audio out of the speaker
when I remove the headphones.

For the record, the speaker *did* work at one point...and I only
started using the rig in October. Although I do pull the headphones
out quite a bit since that's what I use to listen when I operate. This
problem started a few weeks ago and I'm just now starting to think
about trying to find a solution to it.

I'm using the K2 with the KPA100 mounted on top. (At one point I had
the KAT100/KPA100 in the same enclosure, but I have since moved to an
SGC SG-239 at the base of my vertical and no longer need the KAT100 at
this time.)

Any tips for troubleshooting this problem?

Thanks.

You have probably already checked this, but:

Is the lead to the speaker plugged into P5 on th RF board?
Do you get audio if you plug the headphones or a speaker into the rear
Ext Speaker socket?
Is the speaker itself OK, and all wiring intact?

Re: [K2] no speaker audio (perhaps bad headphone jack?)

Alan D. Wilcox, W3DVX
John,
Sounds like the same symptoms I've seen with my K2 recently. When I
jiggle the phone plug a bit, sometimes the spkr comes back, sometimes
not. I'm about to replace the headphone jack.

If I need to plug in headphones, I'll use a short plug+jack cable
that'll remain plugged in. Let THAT jack take the mechanical stress.

Cheers, Alan

I'll check all of that tonight and report back. Don must've slept in
this morning. Surprised he hasn't replied yet. ;-)

Re: [K2] no speaker audio (perhaps bad headphone jack?)

Don Wilhelm-4
  John,

No Don did not sleep in this morning :-) .  He has been slaving over a
hot soldering iron prior to enjoying lunch at a new restaurant.

Remove the right side panel and wiggle the plug for the speaker.  If the
speaker sound comes and goes, get a couple of new crimp pins and re-do
the ends of the speaker wire.

If there is still not sound from the speaker, there is a likelihood that
the infamous little plastic lever inside the headphone which operates
the switch has become broken.  Replacement of the headphone jack is the
only known cure, and no, there are no alternate headphone jacks.

I understand that Elecraft has approached the jack vendor asking for a
better jack, but to no avail.

The only other known solution is to solder the side of the switch that
closes the speaker circuit, and either leave the speaker on all the time
or arrange a switch that you can reach from outside the K2 to turn off
the speaker - A jack with no wires plugged into the external speaker
jack will silence the speaker too.

Don W3FPR

Re: [K2] no speaker audio (perhaps bad headphone jack?)

John Shadle
No audio from the external speaker output. Nothing happens when I
wiggle the speaker cable (which was plugged into P5 on the RF board.
Everything else appears to be just fine. I suppose the next step is to
email the folks at [hidden email]...

Thanks, all.
