K2

wsm-3
Well, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a K2. Will be my largest
project since the Heathkit SB104A thirty years ago.

Is there any surprises that I should watch out for?

Thanks

The SB104A was a good build and a decent radio.  The K2 is an easy build
with lots of checkpoints and good instructions.  Its really hard to go
wrong if you just do what the instructions say exactly.  The end result
though, will be beyond your expectations.  Not on par with your average
radio - on par with some of the best available today.

YES..
Beware strong addiction to solder fumes!
When the K2 are finished it is very likely that you buy a kx1 or a k1 ( or
both) :-)

Too many to list!

But they're all good.

Two warnings:

1) Take your time building. Yes, you want to see it work, and use it, but
once the building is done you will want to build something else. Like some
accessories, or a KX-1, or maybe another K2.

2) The K2 experience will probably ruin you for most other rigs. You'll
wonder why they don't come in kit form, or why their basic radio performance in
some areas is outdone by a rig that costs so much less, or why they need all
those bells and whistles.

You have been warned.

You will have surprises in abundance.  You will find the lack of wiring amazing and wonder why Heath never discoverd modular construction.  You will actually know what KISS means.  That if you follow the simple children's game of "Wayne Says" it will work.

The biggest surprise will be in what you learn.  It has been my pleasure to construct two K2 and one K1 radios.  They have been the best electronics education I have ever had.  And when all is said and done, and the final solder fillet done you will have the pleasure and honor of accomplishing something great.

My long time friend W(D)9DHI said you will have the greatest radio ever.  I would not be so brave, as I still have Asian Iron that is better in a big pile.  But I would tell you that when you have completed your build that you will never have a radio you will love more.  Nor will understand better.

Enjoy your build.  Have fun in constructing it the way that best fits your operating style.  And welcome to the family.  And with due respect to your family, I am pleased with your new addiction.

Re: K2

David A. Belsley
Heath did find modular construction -- at least in their TV sets.  It
was great.

best wishes,

You might want to use the downloaded manual instead of the paper one
when you want to search for parts placement, using Adobe Reader.
