I'm going to use my K2 for Field Day. In prep, I'm putting the K3 aside
and putting the K2 back in the station lineup in order to re-acquaint myself with the its operation. Looking at the cabling diagrams in the KPA500/KAT500 manuals, an RCA jack line from the K2 to the tuner and another RCA jack line from the tuner to the amp looks pretty straight forward. With this setup, do I disconnect the keying/integration cables that normally connect the K3, KPA500 and KAT500? Assuming so, are there any other aspects of using the K2 with the other K-Line units to which I should pay attention? Thanks. ...robert -- Robert G Strickland, PhD ABPH - KE2WY [hidden email] Syracuse, New York, USA ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

I believe you have it right. You could also leave the AUX cable connected from the KAT to the KPA so that the KAT can interrupt the KPA’s PTT signal. You need either that or the RCA-plug cable that you described.
You might want to connect the K2’s serial port to the KPA’s XCVR serial port, select RADIO=SERIAL in the KPA’s menu, and get things going that way. This is tested (by me, among others), and is known to work. If you are using the K2 and KPA/KAT with a computer, be sure to use a Y-adapter (you will have to make one) so that the KPA simply eavesdrops on the computer - K2 communication. If there is no computer, connect the two directly, then set the KPA’s SER POLL menu item to ON so that it will send serial commands to the K2 to get the band. Enjoy the setup! The stock K2 doesn't have a keying line for an amp. Here's an easy way to add one (I recently did this so I could use the K2 with the KXPA100 amp):

True, The K2/10 does not have a keying output, but the K2/100 does have
a Keyout output. Those contemplating the use of the KPA500 and KAT500 will likely have the KPA100 installed. For those who want to use the K2/10 with the KPA500 or other amplifer, read on --- For those who would like to add an amp keying line to the K2/10, I refer you to Tom Hammond (SK) N0SS's web information that is being preserved by the MMARC at http://www.mmccs.com/mmarc/n0ss/. Boards and kits are no longer available - Tom's website is now static, but the information is there including the board layouts if some enterprising amateur would like to create their own boards Tom's K2 amp keying circuit can be easily be implemented on perfboard, the circuit is not that complex. If the K2 has the K60XV option fitted, there is a Keyout signal available at the K60XV J2 pin 2 - connection to an appropriate output jack is the only thing required. There is room for an RCA jack near the key jack - just be certain the hole you drill is clear of the adjustment for the 40 meter bandpass filter inductors. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/7/2014 10:04 PM, Matt VK2RQ wrote: > The stock K2 doesn't have a keying line for an amp. One caution: don't use the ACC cable for one hop and an RCA cable for the other. The amp key interrupt relay in the KAT500 is DPDT, and the KPA500 will key if either the RCA or ACC connector key line path is connected.
