K3 #1025 Build

WILLIS COOKE
K3 ser # 1025, ordered 27 Dec arrived here in Texas
Tuesday, June 10.  I have built it, but when I try to
calibrate the VCO I get Err VCO E00005.  I have
emailed support, but I am not sure if I will get an
answer today.  Anybody seen that error and know what
it is?

K3 #1029 Build

drewko
The build went fine except for mounting the speaker. I think the
supplied fiber and toothed lock washers are too small in diameter for
the width of the speaker mounting slots. It's pretty difficult to keep
them from slipping through the slots, and then the screws go crooked..
I finally gave up and just used larger fiber washers.

I also updated the firmware, no problem. Used a straight serial
connection to the PC. But I'm wondering, would it be okay to plug in
the serial cable while the K3 and PC are powered up?

Here's an assembly hint... Use a magnetized screwdriver. It is much,
much more convenient! (The only screws that aren't magnetic are the
display window screws.)

RE: K3 #1029 Build

Dick Dievendorff
I plug and unplug serial cables into my PC and K3 all the time without
worrying about powering down either the PC or the K3.

If equipment tended to be sensitive and were damaged by this action it would
be common knowledge, and vendors of this sort of equipment would be have to
deal with many customer support issues.  Successful vendors would implement
a solution that isn't bothered by these (reasonable) customer actions.

I've not heard that this is a problem.

Congratulations on your successful build!

The risk with RS232C is that the grounds on the too devices may differ
and the equalisation current might, initially flow through a signal
connection.  RS232C is specified to tolerate all sorts of short circuits
within its voltage range, so, if you have good ground bonding between
the devices, you should be OK.

Note that the AUXBus, that is on the same connector on some Elecraft
rigs is not designed to be resillient.

Nonetheless, RS232C is not designed for hot plugging.  Equipment, like
USB, designed for hot plugging has different length pins on the
connectors, so that ground always makes first, and any power feed second.

Most people have good ground bonding.

I remember a case were an RS232C interface was destroyed because the
trainee doing the cable hadn't connected the ground on the power
distribution strip.  Current leakage from the power supplies put the
system ground for one piece of equipment at about half mains voltage,
albeit at a high enough impedance that it only caused a tingle.  Only
with the serial cables engaged was it actually grounded, and inserting
the cable risked doing the initial grounding through a signal lead.

Pelican Case for K2

Matt Patterson-9
I'm curious for those of you who use a Pelican case to carry around your
K2 what model you're using.  There are several to choose from and was
curious if there's an accepted model that fits the K2 the best.  I'm
looking at the 1450.

Re: Pelican Case for K2

Jim Wiley-2
Matt -

Consider also the Samsonite L25 soft-side case.  This is a small version
of a laptop case, and it fits the K2 perfectly.  There is room for the
K2,  a Kenwood MC-43 microphone, a Palm-Paddle, a small laptop 12V power
supply to use as a battery charger, the K2 instruction booklet, power
cables, a folding headset, some basic antenna materials, and a few other
bits.

It has lots of zipper pouches to accommodate loose stuff.  It also has a
pair of Velcro straps inside the main case that fit snugly over the main
K2 to keep it in place.  Not bad for about $36 on Amazon.com.  I have
used one of these cases for some time now.  No damage to the K2 or any
of it's accessories, ever.

Another advantage - it is about the size of a woman's purse (and it has
a carry strap), and so far I have successfully convinced airline types
that it should fit under the same rules that allow women to carry a
handbag and not have it charged against my baggage or carry-on
allowance.   This is one time where "non-discrimination" rules work in
my favor!  <grin>

Re: Pelican Case for K2

Matt Patterson-9
Jim,

Thanks for the info!  That case sounds exactly like what I'm looking
for.  I'm looking for something that will allow me to take my K2 along
on trips and things like that.
