I just had what might be a nice idea for those, who like myself, feel
that the K3 could do with better speech processing. It might be an idea to allow routing the the front or rear panel microphone input, after the microphone gain adjustment/control to the LINE OUT socket and route LINE IN to the normal SSB processing. This could allow one to add an external stage of processing: mic -> K3 in -> mic gain -> line out -> black box -> line in -> ssb processing Good idea? Bad idea? A possible distant future to do? -- Toby, Sounds okay, but you can essentially do the same thing now simply by foregoing the K3's mic gain stage, i.e. ... mic -> black box -> K3 in -> ssb processing However, what I don't know without referring to the K3 schematics, is where in the chain the TX EQ and Compression are applied? If either or both are in the K3's "mic gain" stage, that would make your suggestion that much more desirable. BTW, what exactly do you envision this black box doing? Is it implemented in hardware or in software? I would put it in the microphone lead.
The most successful method I have come across for improving readability of signals when SSB is not getting through is to use CW. I would like to be able to use my morse key in SSB mode without doing anything except pressing the key. I know I can do this with an audio oscillator injected into the SSB chain, but with DSP it ought to be easy to just generate it at the IF. Mike

One reason would be that one wants use the the K3's TX equalizer before doing any external processing. It would depend on what's possible, and how and if Elecraft might implement such a function. Like I said, I just wanted to float the idea, because I felt it might be neat.
