K3 AM transmit help

k5oai
I read that the K3 runs AM at reduced output:
http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3_specs.htm

TRANSMITTER

Output Power: 200 mW –100 W, ALC controlled (Reduced power on AM.)

but I can't seem to find anywhere
that says exactly what power output range
I should turn the PWR gain up to????

TIA

Re: K3 AM transmit help

Set the Power control to 100W.  In AM mode, the actual carrier output will be about 25W.  That will produce 100W PEP when modulated to 100%.

  Sam,

If you think in old terms about AM when we referred to the carrier
power, then yes, the K3 power will be reduced to 25 watts on AM,

But the K3 power is referred to in PEP.  A fully modulated AM signal
with 25 watts of carrier power will produce 100 watts of PEP output.

Since the K3 detects and controls power at the PEP level, set the power
control to anything under 100 watts to produce the 100 watt PEP signal.

Yes, that's correct.

Crank it up to 100W on the dial -- that will give you a signal about the same as a barefoot Ranger or other similar single 6146 transmitter.
